🧩 TPU-Desmopan – Thermoplastic Polyurethane (Desmopan® ECO)
(High-performance thermoplastic elastomer from the Desmopan® ECO range by Covestro. Known for high transparency, exceptional mechanical strength, and stable elasticity. The ECO version uses bio-based raw materials and is 100% recyclable.)
🔹 What is TPU-Desmopan
Desmopan® TPU is a block copolymer that combines rigid and flexible segments for ultimate durability. At ReplastMD, we value Desmopan for its consistent performance between -40 °C and +120 °C. The ECO version contains 30–60% bio-renewable components, offering the same physical properties as fossil-based TPU while reducing environmental impact. It is easy to weld and highly resistant to oils and abrasion.
🔧 Composition & Properties
- Polymer Base: Polyurethane Copolymer (TPU).
- ECO Origin: 30–60% bio-sourced or CO₂-based.
- Density: 1.10 – 1.25 g/cm³.
- Hardness (Shore A/D): 70 A – 60 D.
- Chemical Resistance: Very good (oils, greases, fuels).
- UV Resistance: High (with stabilizers).
🚗 Where TPU-Desmopan is used in the automotive industry
| Component | Example parts | Observations |
| Dynamic Gaskets | Rings, bellows, dampers | Pressure, oil, and abrasion resistant |
| Hoses & Tubes | Fuel and brake lines | Flexible, airtight, chemical resistant |
| Protective Parts | Covers, clips, mounts | Mechanically stable, won’t crack in cold |
| Aesthetic Elements | Grilles, inserts, emblems | High gloss and optical clarity |
🔧 Welding Temperature and Methods
| Method | Compatibility | Observations |
| Hot Air | ✅ Excellent | 230 – 260 °C; uniform melt |
| Heat Plate (Mirror) | ✅ Very Good | 230 – 250 °C; glossy, clear bonding |
| Manual Extrusion | ✅ Recommended | 240 – 260 °C; compatible TPU rod |
| Ultrasonic | ✅ Possible | Efficient for thin technical parts |
🔩 Material Compatibility
- ✅ Compatible: TPU, Desmopan, Pearlthane, Elastollan – Excellent.
- ⚠️ Partial: PA, PC, PBT (with polyurethane primer).
- ❌ Incompatible: PP, PE, PTFE, POM, PVC – no adhesion, different melting points.
💡 ReplastMD Recommendation: TPU-Desmopan welds perfectly with hot air at ≈ 250 °C. Use a compatible Desmopan or TPU rod and maintain constant pressure during cooling to ensure a smooth, clear joint.
🧠 How to Identify TPU-Desmopan
- Surface: Glossy, smooth, and highly elastic.
- Color: Transparent or slightly yellowish (natural state).
- ReplastMD practical test: Extremely tough to tear. Burns with a clean flame and a faint urethane odor.
- Common markings: >TPU<, >DESMOPAN<, >ECO-TPU<.
