🧩 TPS+Mater-Bi – Bio-Thermoplastic Starch (Mater-Bi®)
(High-quality biodegradable material made from modified vegetable starch combined with aliphatic and aromatic biodegradable polyesters. The Mater-Bi® series by Novamont is one of the most advanced commercial bioplastics.)
🔹 What is TPS+Mater-Bi
Mater-Bi® is a family of starch-based biopolymers compatibilized with bio-polyesters like PBAT, PBS, or PCL. At ReplastMD, we treat it as a high-performance “organic polyethylene.” It is designed for total biodegradability and offers a unique waxy texture and natural gloss. It’s the preferred choice for eco-friendly interior accents and soft-touch components in modern vehicles.
🔧 Composition & Properties
- Base Phase: Thermoplastic starch (TPS).
- Bio-Polymers: PBAT / PBS / PCL.
- Density: 1.20 – 1.30 g/cm³.
- Melting Point: 110 – 140 °C.
- Operating Range: –10 °C to +70 °C.
- Scent: Pleasant vegetal scent, no aromatic compounds.
🚗 Where TPS+Mater-Bi is used in the automotive industry
| Component | Example parts | Observations |
| Eco Interior Elements | Covers, decorations, handles | 100% bio-based, glossy and soft |
| Bio Gaskets & Inserts | Panels, plates, consoles | Flexible, pleasant touch |
| Bio Demo Parts | Prototype components | Sustainable alternative to PE/PP |
| Decorative Accents | Non-structural inserts | Natural look, warm colors |
🔧 Welding Temperature and Methods
| Method | Optimal Temp | Observations |
| Hot Air | ⚠️ 110 – 130 °C | Possible uneven melting, risk of browning |
| Heat Plate (Mirror) | ⚠️ 120 – 130 °C | Slow bonding, local deformation risk |
| Manual Extrusion | ❌ Not recommended | Material is too heat-sensitive |
| Chemical Bonding | ✅ Recommended | Bio-polyester or modified starch adhesives |
💡 ReplastMD Recommendation: TPS+Mater-Bi does not respond well to classic hot-air welding; it tends to burn and turn brown. At ReplastMD, we apply bio-compatible bonding or controlled mechanical fastening to preserve its natural texture and aesthetic.
