🧩 TPE-U – Polyurethane Copolymer (TPU)

(Polyurethane-type thermoplastic elastomer derived from segmented polyester or polyether copolymers. Known as TPU, it combines rubber-like elasticity with outstanding mechanical and chemical resistance.)

🔹 What is TPE-U

TPE-U (Thermoplastic Polyurethane) is a block copolymer consisting of hard (urethane) and soft (ether or ester) segments. It offers a unique combination of elasticity, durability, and abrasion resistance, remaining flexible even at low temperatures down to -40 °C. At ReplastMD, we consider TPU one of the most versatile materials for flexible automotive components subject to high mechanical stress.

🔧 Composition & Properties

  • Base: Thermoplastic polyurethane copolymer.
  • Density: 1.1 – 1.25 g/cm³.
  • Melting Point: 170 – 220 °C.
  • Continuous Operating Temp: –40 °C → +110 °C.
  • Chemical Resistance: Excellent (oils, fuels, solvents).

🚗 Where TPE-U is used in the automotive industry

ComponentExample partsObservations
Flexible HosesFuel, air, and cooling linesHigh chemical and mechanical resistance
Gaskets & SealsCovers, connectors, valvesElastic seal, oil resistant
Anti-vibrationBushings, dampers, mountsElasticity + fatigue resistance
ProtectionSensor housings, boots, plugsFlexibility and UV stability

🔧 Welding Temperature and Methods

MethodOptimal TempObservations
Hot Air240 – 260 °CElastic, clean joint; bubble-free
Heat Plate (Mirror)230 – 250 °CPrecise weld without degradation
Manual Extrusion240 – 260 °CCompatible TPU / TPE-U rod
UltrasonicPossible for thin-walled parts

🔩 Material Compatibility

  • Compatible: TPE-U (same type), TPE-E, TPE-A, TPE.
  • ⚠️ Partial: PU (Cast Polyurethane).
  • Incompatible: PP, PE, ABS, PVC, PA, PC, POM, PET (different polarities).

💡 ReplastMD Recommendation: Weld TPE-U with hot air at 250 °C using a compatible TPU rod, moderate pressure, and slow cooling. Avoid overheating, as the material will turn yellow-transparent and become overly stretchable.

🧠 How to Identify TPE-U

  • Elastic texture, often clear or translucent.
  • Slightly rubbery, glossy surface.
  • ReplastMD practical test: Melts uniformly at 200–230 °C without heavy smoke, releasing a faint sweet polyurethane scent.
  • Common markings: >TPU<, >TPE-U<, >ELASTOLLAN<, >DESMOPAN<.
