🧩 TPE-O – Olefinic Elastomer (PP + EPDM)
(Flexible thermoplastic material composed of a blend of polypropylene (PP) and olefinic rubber (EPDM). Similar to TPE-V but unvulcanized, making it lighter and cost-effective while maintaining elasticity and excellent weldability.)
🔹 What is TPE-O
TPE-O (Thermoplastic Olefin), or TPO, is a homogeneous blend of PP and EPDM rubber. At ReplastMD, we handle TPO frequently for exterior trim and protection repairs. It is highly weldable with PP rods, UV-resistant, and recyclable. It’s the material of choice for components where medium flexibility and weather resistance are required at an optimized cost.
🔧 Composition & Properties
- Main Matrix: Polypropylene (PP).
- Elastic Phase: EPDM rubber (10–40 %).
- Density: 0.89 – 0.96 g/cm³ (very lightweight).
- Melting Point: 170 – 190 °C.
- Continuous Operating Temp: –40 °C to +100 °C.
- Chemical Resistance: Good (oils, greases, weak acids).
🚗 Where TPE-O is used in the automotive industry
| Component | Example parts | Observations |
| Exterior Gaskets | Door, trunk, and wheel arch seals | Resistance to UV and temperature cycles |
| Flexible Protectors | Mudflaps, bellows, covers | Elasticity and impact resistance |
| Decorative Elements | Strips, moldings, corner pieces | Lightweight, recyclable, weldable |
| Handles / Covers | Engine covers, controls, sockets | Matte, non-slip surface |
🔧 Welding Temperature and Methods
| Method | Optimal Temp | Observations |
| Hot Air | 240 – 260 °C | Clean, uniform weld |
| Heat Plate (Mirror) | 230 – 250 °C | Smooth bonding, bubble-free |
| Manual Extrusion | 240 – 260 °C | Use compatible TPE-O or PP rods |
| Ultrasonic | — | Possible for thin-walled parts |
🔩 Material Compatibility
- ✅ Compatible: TPE-O (same type), PP, TPO, TPE-V.
- ⚠️ Partial: TPE-S, TPE-E, TPE-U (acceptable bond).
- ❌ Incompatible: PA, PC, POM, PET, PVC (different melting points).
💡 ReplastMD Recommendation: For TPE-O welding, use hot air at 250 °C with PP or TPE-O rods. Apply constant pressure during cooling to ensure a soft, airtight, and uniform joint.
🧠 How to Identify TPE-O
- Matte, soft, slightly rubbery texture.
- Color: Black, gray, beige; low gloss.
- ReplastMD practical test: Softens gradually at 200 °C without sudden melting; emits a faint olefinic scent (similar to PP).
- Common markings: >TPE-O<, >TPO<, >VISTAFLEX<, >DAPLEN<.
🛠️ TPE-O Welding at ReplastMD:
At our ReplastMD service center (Chisinau, Ciocana sector), we perform professional welding for TPE-O/TPO components like mudflaps and trim. We ensure an elastic, UV-stable joint that maintains the original matte appearance — plastic as good as new.
