🧩 TPE-E – Copolyether-ester

(High-performance thermoplastic elastomer combining rubber-like elasticity with the thermal and mechanical strength of polyesters. Used for hoses, bellows, cables, and parts subjected to repeated stress.)

🔹 What is TPE-E

TPE-E (Thermoplastic Copolyether-Ester) is a semi-crystalline material made of rigid polyester segments (PBT) and soft polyether segments (PTMG). This structure provides a unique mix of flexibility, high mechanical strength, and resistance to oils and high temperatures. At ReplastMD, we treat TPE-E as the “heavy-duty” elastomer, essential for high-stress automotive components.

🔧 Composition & Properties

  • Base: 100% Polyester-polyether copolymer (TPE-E).
  • Density: 1.1 – 1.3 g/cm³.
  • Melting Point: 180 – 220 °C.
  • Continuous Operating Temp: 120 – 150 °C.
  • Chemical Resistance: Excellent (oils, fuels, greases).

🚗 Where TPE-E is used in the automotive industry

ComponentExample partsObservations
Flexible HosesFuel, air, and oil linesSuperior fluid and pressure resistance
Bellows & BootsCV joint boots, suspension coversWear resistance and high elasticity

Cables / ConnectorsFlexible electrical insulationOil and temperature resistant

🔧 Welding Temperature and Methods

MethodOptimal TempObservations
Hot Air240 – 260 °CClean, elastic joint
Heat Plate (Mirror)230 – 250 °Bubble-free, uniform weld
Manual Extrusion240 – 260 °CUse compatible TPE-E / TPU rods
UltrasonicSuitable for thin-walled parts

🔩 Material Compatibility

  • Compatible: TPE-E (same type), TPU, TPE-U.
  • ⚠️ Partial: PBT (good boundary compatibility).
  • Incompatible: PP, PE, ABS, PVC, PA, PC, POM (different melting points).

💡 ReplastMD Recommendation: For TPE-E welding, use hot air at 250 °C with constant pressure and slow cooling. Do not overheat, as the material can become overly glossy and brittle.

🧠 How to Identify TPE-E

  • Rubbery texture but firmer than standard TPE; features a satin-like gloss.
  • Color: Milky-white, black, or translucent.
  • ReplastMD practical test: Melts cleanly at 200 °C without heavy smoke, releasing a faint sweet (ester-like) odor.
  • Common markings: >TPE-E<, >COPE<, >HYTREL<, >ARNITEL<.
