🧩 SAN+ABS – Styrene Acrylonitrile + Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene

(High-quality technical material, rigid, glossy, and impact-resistant. Frequently used for frames, panels, caps, and visible interior automotive parts. The SAN+ABS combination offers a balance between clarity, hardness, and dimensional stability.)

🔹 What is SAN+ABS

SAN+ABS is a hybrid styrenic blend resulting from the combination of two copolymers: SAN (styrene-acrylonitrile) and ABS (acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene).

This blend brings together the gloss and chemical resistance of SAN with the elasticity and toughness of ABS.

Result: an aesthetic, rigid material, easy to process, and stable at moderate temperatures. It is used in interior decorative parts, technical frames, panels, and visible components requiring a clean finish and scratch resistance.

🔧 Composition

  • Styrene ($C_8H_8$): 55–65 %
  • Acrylonitrile ($C_3H_3N$): 15–25 %
  • Butadiene ($C_4H_6$): 5–15 %
  • Density: 1.06–1.08 g/cm³
  • Softening Point: ≈ 230–250 °C
  • Chemical Resistance: Good (oils, mild solvents, detergents).
  • UV Resistance: Medium (can be improved with ASA or PMMA additions).

🚗 Where SAN+ABS is used in the automotive industry

ComponentExample partsObservations
Car InteriorVent frames, caps, panelsGlossy finish, rigid, no deformation
Light ExteriorSensor caps, mirror housingsGood resistance to low impact
EquipmentButton housings, frames, modulesGood thermal and aesthetic stability
DecorativeVisible parts, glossy insertsSmooth surface, high gloss

🔧 Welding Temperature and Methods

MethodOptimal TemperatureObservations
Hot Air250 – 270 °CClean joint, good control
Heat Plate (Mirror)240 – 260 °CIdeal for flat edges
Manual Extrusion240 – 260 °CFor long cracks or thick parts

🔩 What to Weld SAN+ABS With (Material Compatibility)

Being a styrenic material, SAN+ABS is compatible with most materials in the ABS, SAN, ASA, and PS families.

Compatible with:

  • SAN+ABS ↔ ABS / SAN / ASA / ABS+PMMA – excellent compatibility.
  • SAN+ABS ↔ ABS+SAN / ABS+ASA / ASA+PC – very good compatibility.
  • SAN+ABS ↔ ABS+PC / ASA+PMMA – partially compatible.

Incompatible with:

  • PP, PE, PA, PVC, TPO – different melting points and shrinkage rates.

💡 ReplastMD Recommendation:

Use standard ABS rods or SAN rods at 255–265 °C. Heating should be gradual to avoid overheating the gloss. For visible finishes, the gloss can be restored with a short hot air pass or acrylic polish.
