🧩 PVDF+PA – Polyvinylidene Fluoride + Polyamide
(Bilayer composite material combining the chemical and thermal resistance of PVDF with the flexibility and adhesion of polyamide (PA11 / PA12). Used in fuel lines and hydraulic systems.)
🔹 What is PVDF+PA
PVDF+PA is a multilayer hybrid material. The inner PVDF layer acts as a barrier against aggressive fluids (gasoline, ethanol), while the outer PA layer provides mechanical impact resistance and flexibility. This combination is highly favored in modern automotive engineering for fuel, braking, and vacuum systems due to the complementary properties of both polymers.
🔧 Composition & Properties
- Composition: 40–60% PVDF, 40–60% Polyamide (PA11 / PA12).
- Density: 1.45–1.70 g/cm³.
- Melting Point: ≈ 170–180 °C.
- Chemical Resistance: Total (fuels, oils, solvents).
- Continuous Heat Resistance: 140–160 °C.
🚗 Where PVDF+PA is used in the automotive industry
| Component | Example parts | Observations |
| Fuel / Injection | Hoses, pipes, fittings | Perfect seal, ethanol resistant |
| Braking / Vacuum | Lines, connectors, gaskets | High thermal stability and rigidity |
| EGR / Cooling | Tubes, valves, fittings | Resists heat and corrosive fluids |
| Hydraulic / Air | Hoses, clips, nozzles | High flexibility and tight sealing |
🔧 Welding Temperature and Methods
| Method | Optimal Temp | Observations |
| Hot Air | 250 – 270 °C | Precise control, PA layer melts first |
| Heat Plate (Mirror) | 250 – 260 °C | Uniform bond, avoids PVDF overheating |
| Plastic Extrusion | 250 – 270 °C | PVDF or compatible PA rods |
| Heat Fusion | 250 – 260 °C | Ideal for multilayer PVDF+PA pipes |
🔩 Material Compatibility
- ✅ Compatible: PVDF, ETFE, ECTFE, PFA, PA11, PA12.
- ⚠️ Good Compatibility: FEP, PFA (partial compatibility).
- ❌ Incompatible: PP, PE, ABS, PC, POM, PVC, PET.
💡 ReplastMD Recommendation: Use PVDF rods for the inner layer and PA12 rods for the outer layer at ≈ 260 °C. Heat gradually and uniformly to avoid oxidizing the fluorinated layer. Allow natural cooling for a perfect interlayer bond.
🧠 How to Identify PVDF+PA
- Engraved marking: >PVDF+PA<, >MULTILAYER<, >KYNAR<, >SOLEF<.
- Cross-section: Glossy white interior (PVDF), matte gray or black exterior (PA).
- ReplastMD practical test: Smooth surface, slightly rigid but handles bending well. Self-extinguishes during burning with no intense odor.
