🧩 PPS+Xyron – Polyphenylene Sulfide (Idemitsu Xyron® blend)
(A precision technical material developed by Idemitsu Kosan (Japan) under the Xyron® brand. It is a modified PPS blend with elastomeric and thermal additives for superior dimensional stability and high durability.)
🔹 What is PPS+Xyron
PPS+Xyron® is a compatibilized PPS developed by Idemitsu Japan to offer superior thermal resistance (up to 240°C continuous use) and extremely low shrinkage. Compared to standard PPS, Xyron® features significantly improved toughness and impact resistance, making it the ideal choice for technical housings and fittings that combine extreme rigidity with controlled elasticity.
🔧 Composition & Properties
- Base: 85–95% PPS.
- Modifiers: 5–15% (elastomers, compatibilizers, stabilizers).
- Density: 1.35–1.45 g/cm³.
- Melting Point: ≈ 285 °C.
- Chemical Resistance: Excellent (oils, fuels, acids).
- Continuous Heat Resistance: 220–240 °C.
🚗 Where PPS+Xyron is used in the automotive industry
| Component | Example parts | Observations |
| Engine / Thermal | Sensor covers, pumps, EGR valves | Stability above 220 °C |
| Electrical / Sensors | Housing cases, bobbins, plates | Excellent insulation and precision |
| Fuel / Braking | Fittings, fluid-contact parts | Low shrinkage, high chemical resistance |
| Technical Interior | Frames, clips, tech covers | Rigid yet slightly flexible via Xyron® |
🔧 Welding Temperature and Methods
| Method | Optimal Temp | Observations |
| Hot Air | 300 – 320 °C | Slow, uniform melting, no bubbles |
| Plastic Extrusion | 290 – 310 °C | Suitable for thick technical parts |
| Heat Plate (Mirror) | 290 – 310 °C | Clean, smooth bonding |
🔩 Material Compatibility
- ✅ Compatible: PPS, PPS+GF, PPS+CF, PPS+PEI, PPS+Noryl, PPS+Valox, PBT+PPS.
- ⚠️ Good Compatibility: PPA, PEI, PSU, PPSU, PES.
- ❌ Incompatible: PP, PE, PS, ABS, PC, PET (completely different melting points).
💡 ReplastMD Recommendation: Use PPS or PPS+Xyron® rods at 310°C. Heating must be uniform and moderate to avoid surface matting. Slow cooling maintains the smooth finish and crack resistance.
🧠 How to Identify PPS+Xyron
- Engraved marking: >XYRON<, >PPS+XYRON<, >RYTON X<, >FORTRON X<.
- Texture: Matte or semi-glossy, very fine technical finish.
- ReplastMD practical test: If the part is rigid, fine-textured, and slightly elastic with a Xyron marking, it’s confirmed. Softens at ≈ 285 °C.
