🧩 PPS+PEI – Polyphenylene Sulfide + Polyetherimide
(Top-tier technical material with extreme thermal stability, high rigidity, and superior chemical resistance. Used in engine parts, sensors, and electrical components exposed to $240–260$ °C.)
🔹 What is PPS+PEI
PPS+PEI is a compatibilized blend that combines the hardness and chemical inertness of PPS with the dimensional stability and dielectric strength of Polyetherimide (PEI). This combination is designed for extreme thermal and chemical environments where other materials (PA, PBT, PC) fail. PPS+PEI maintains its shape and properties even after thousands of thermal cycles between $-40$ °C and $+250$ °C.
🔧 Composition & Properties
- Base: $60–80$% PPS, $20–40$% PEI.
- Density: $1.45–1.55$ g/cm³.
- Melting Point: ≈ $280–290$ °C.
- Chemical Resistance: Exceptional (oils, solvents, fuels).
- Continuous Heat Resistance: $230–260$ °C.
🚗 Where PPS+PEI is used in the automotive industry
| Component | Example parts | Observations |
| Engine / Thermal | EGR housings, valves, sensor covers | Resists over $250$ °C |
| Electrical Systems | Coil housings, sensor plates | Superior insulation and stability |
| Fuel / Braking | Fluid contact parts | Chemically inert, low shrinkage |
| Technical Structures | ECU covers, fittings | Rigid, stable, inherently flame retardant |
🔧 Welding Temperature and Methods
| Method | Optimal Temp | Observations |
| Hot Air | $320 – 340$ °C | Slow melting, dense and stable flow |
| Plastic Extrusion | $300 – 330$ °C | Requires PPS+PEI rod, precise control |
| Heat Plate (Mirror) | $300 – 330$ °C | Clean bonding, no oxidation |
🔩 Material Compatibility
- ✅ Compatible: PPS, PEI, PPS+GF, PEEK+PPS, PES, PSU, PPSU.
- ⚠️ Good Compatibility: PA+PPS, PPA, PEI+GF.
- ❌ Incompatible: PP, PE, PS, ABS, PET (completely different melting points).
💡 ReplastMD Recommendation: Use PPS+PEI or pure PPS rods at $330$ °C. Heat slowly and uniformly to avoid internal stress. A quick smoothing pass with hot air after welding can unify the final look.
🧠 How to Identify PPS+PEI
- Engraved marking: >PPS+PEI<, >RYTON PEI<, >EXTEM<, >FORTRON PEI<.
- Texture: Matte or semi-glossy, extremely rigid.
- ReplastMD practical test: If the part is rigid, highly heat-resistant, and marked with Extem or Ryton PEI, it is confirmed. Softens at ≈ $290$ °C.
