🧩 PPS+PA – Polyphenylene Sulfide + Polyamide
(A high-performance technical composite that blends the chemical and thermal resistance of PPS with the elasticity and toughness of polyamide (PA6 or PA66). The result is a rigid material, stable up to $200–230$ °C, but less brittle than pure PPS.)
🔹 What is PPS+PA
PPS+PA is a compatibilized blend between Polyphenylene Sulfide (PPS) and Polyamide (PA), designed to leverage the advantages of both. PPS provides exceptional thermal and chemical stability, while PA (Nylon) offers superior impact resistance and flexibility. This combination features low shrinkage and high geometric precision, making it ideal for vibration-prone engine components.
🔧 Composition & Properties
- Base: $50–70$% PPS, $30–50$% PA (6 / 66 / 12).
- Density: $1.35–1.45$ g/cm³.
- Melting Point: ≈ $260–280$ °C.
- Chemical Resistance: Excellent (oils, fuels, solvents).
- Continuous Heat Resistance: $180–220$ °C.
🚗 Where PPS+PA is used in the automotive industry
| Component | Example parts | Observations |
| Engine / Thermal | Sensor covers, pumps, EGR housings | High thermal stability |
| Electrical / Connectors | Housings, supports, guides | Resistance to oils and vibrations |
| Fuel / Braking | Fittings, fluid contact parts | Chemically inert, low shrinkage |
| Technical Interior | Rigid aesthetic covers | Matte finish, technical appearance |
🔧 Welding Temperature and Methods
| Method | Optimal Temp | Observations |
| Hot Air | $290 – 320$ °C | Slow melting, controlled flow |
| Plastic Extrusion | $280 – 310$ °C | Suitable for thick technical parts |
| Heat Plate (Mirror) | $280 – 310$ °C | Clean bond, zero oxidation |
🔩 Material Compatibility
- ✅ Compatible: PPS, PA6, PA66, PA12, PPS+GF, PPS+CF, PBT+PPS.
- ⚠️ Good Compatibility: PPA, PEEK+PPS, PPSU.
- ❌ Incompatible: PP, PE, PS, ABS, PET (completely different melting points).
💡 ReplastMD Recommendation: Use PPS+PA, PPS, or PA66 rods at $305$ °C. Heating must be slow and uniform to prevent phase separation. A light smoothing with hot air after welding ensures a uniform finish.
🧠 How to Identify PPS+PA
- Engraved marking: >PPS+PA<, >RYTON PA<, >FORTRON PA<.
- Texture: Matte, slightly textured surface.
- ReplastMD practical test: If the part is rigid but slightly resilient, resistant to hot air, and marked with PPS+PA, it is confirmed. Softens at ≈ $280$ °C.
