🧩 PPS+GF40 – Polyphenylene Sulfide + 40% Glass Fiber
(An advanced technical material for extreme applications – exceptional thermal, mechanical, and chemical resistance even above $240$°C. PPS+GF40 is rigid, dimensionally stable, and inherently flame-retardant.)
🔹 What is PPS+GF40
PPS+GF40 is a high-performance thermoplastic composite. By encapsulating $40$% glass fiber within the PPS matrix, the resulting material achieves $2–3$ times higher tensile strength and rigidity than pure PPS. It features minimal thermal expansion and near-zero moisture absorption. It is the preferred choice for parts requiring high precision and resistance to mechanical shock under extreme heat.
🔧 Composition & Properties
- Composition: $60$% PPS, $40$% Glass Fiber (GF).
- Density: $1.65–1.70$ g/cm³.
- Melting Point: ≈ $285$ °C.
- Chemical Resistance: Exceptional (oils, fuels, acids, bases).
- Continuous Heat Resistance: $220–240$ °C.
🚗 Where PPS+GF40 is used in the automotive industry
| Component | Example parts | Observations |
| Engine / Thermal | Pumps, EGR valves, coolers | Thermal stability above $230$ °C |
| Fuel / Braking | Connectors, fittings, valve bodies | Exceptional chemical resistance |
| Electrical Systems | Sensor housings, bobbins | High insulation and rigidity |
| Mechanical Parts | Brackets, mounts, clips | Extremely rigid, hard to deform |
🔧 Welding Temperature and Methods
| Method | Optimal Temp | Observations |
| Hot Air | $310 – 340$ °C | Slow melting, strict flow control |
| Plastic Extrusion | $300 – 320$ °C | Requires PPS+GF rod, dense melt |
| Heat Plate (Mirror) | $300 – 320$ °C | Clean bonding, no porosity |
🔩 Material Compatibility
- ✅ Compatible: PPS, PPS+GF, PPS+CF, PA+PPS, PEEK+PPS, PBT+PPS.
- ⚠️ Good Compatibility: PEI, PES, PPSU, PSU.
- ❌ Incompatible: PP, PE, PS, ABS, PET (completely different melting points).
💡 ReplastMD Recommendation: Use PPS+GF or pure PPS rods at $320$ °C. Heat slowly and uniformly; rapid cooling can lead to internal stresses. Avoid excessive pressure as the material is dense and brittle under shear force.
🧠 How to Identify PPS+GF40
- Engraved marking: >PPS+GF40<, >RYTON R-4<, >FORTRON 1140<.
- Texture: Matte, textured, extremely rigid surface.
- ReplastMD practical test: Heavy part, very stiff. Burns with a blue flame and a sulfur-like scent. Softens at ≈ $290$ °C without bubbling.
