🧩 PP+Moplen – Moplen® Polypropylene (Automotive EPDM Blend)
(Weldable elastic-rigid OEM plastic, frequently used in car bumpers, covers, and flexible body elements)
🔹 What is PP+Moplen
Moplen® is a modified polypropylene brand produced by LyondellBasell, very commonly used in the automotive industry.
PP+Moplen is actually a polypropylene compound with EPDM elastomer or TPO, optimized for impact resistance, UV stability, and paint compatibility. It is one of the most common OEM materials in modern car bumpers — balanced between rigidity and elasticity, with a characteristic matte finish.
🔧 Composition
- PP (Polypropylene) – thermoplastic base
- EPDM (Ethylene-Propylene-Diene-Monomer) – synthetic rubber for elasticity
- Moplen® Additives – UV stabilizers, anti-scratch agents, compatibilizers
- Common types: Moplen® EP300L, EP440G, EP548U
🚗 Where PP+Moplen is used in the automotive industry
| Component | Example parts | Observations |
| Body / Exterior | Car bumpers, spoilers, wheel liners | Standard for European OEMs |
| Technical Interior | Covers, panels, mounts | Matte finish, vibration resistant |
| Engine Compartment | Covers, lower protectors | Thermally stable and elastic |
| Aftermarket / Tuning | Extensions, air diffusers, sport elements | Original look, easy to paint |
🔧 Welding temperatures and methods
| Method | Optimal temperature | Observations |
| Hot air | 270 – 290 °C | Uniform melting, no bubbles |
| Heat plate (mirror) | 260 – 280 °C | Clean, controlled bonding |
| Manual extrusion | 250 – 270 °C | For long cracks and broken corners |
| Ultrasonic | — | Industrial applications only |
🔩 What to weld PP+Moplen with (Material compatibility)
Many ask “what to weld PP+Moplen with” because this material is used in most modern car bumpers. Being a PP-EPDM blend, it welds perfectly with other elastically modified PP materials.
✅ Compatible:
- PP+Moplen ↔ PP+Moplen – ideal combination, identical OEM joint
- PP+Moplen ↔ PP+EPDM / PP+TPO / PP+TPV – excellent compatibility
- PP+Moplen ↔ PP-C / PP-H / PP-HI – compatible, but more rigid
- PP+Moplen ↔ PP+TD20 / PP+MD20 – partially compatible (shrinkage differs)
❌ Incompatible:
- PE, ABS, ASA, PC, PA, PVC – different melting, will not bond
💡 ReplastMD Recommendation:
Use PP-EPDM or PP-TPO welding rods at a temperature of 275–285 °C. Clean the surface with isopropyl alcohol before welding and work with a constant hot air flow for uniform melting.
