🧩 PPA – Polyphthalamide (High Performance PPA)

(High-performance aromatic polyamide with exceptional temperature resistance, dimensional stability, and superior chemical durability. Used in high-precision automotive components: sensors, connectors, and engine bay parts.)

🔹 What is PPA

PPA (Polyphthalamide) is a semi-crystalline aromatic polyamide. Due to its aromatic structure, it possesses very high thermal rigidity (withstands up to 200–230 °C), low water absorption, and excellent chemical resistance. It is the standard material for engine connectors, pumps, braking systems, transmission parts, and metal–plastic supports.

🔧 Composition

  • Polyphthalamide (PPA): 100%
  • Optional Additives: glass fibers, thermal stabilizers, solid lubricants.
  • Density: 1.30–1.45 g/cm³.
  • Melting Point: ≈ 300–320 °C.
  • Chemical Resistance: Excellent (oils, fuels, antifreeze, solvents).
  • Continuous Heat Resistance: 160–200 °C.

🚗 Where PPA is used in the automotive industry

ComponentExample partsObservations
Engine / InjectionSensor covers, connectors, pumpsExcellent heat and fuel resistance
Braking / TransmissionSupports, low-friction partsHardness and pressure stability
Electrical SystemsHigh-power connectors, support platesHigh insulation and thermal resistance
Tech / StructuralHousings, clips, spacersRigidity and vibration resistance

🔧 Welding Temperature and Methods

MethodOptimal TemperatureObservations
Hot Air310 – 330 °CRapid melting, strict control
Heat Plate (Mirror)300 – 320 °CStrong joint without voids
Manual Extrusion300 – 320 °CSuitable for thick or reinforced parts

🔩 What to Weld PPA With (Material Compatibility)

PPA welds only with similar high-temperature technical materials from the aromatic range.

Compatible with:

  • PPA ↔ PPA / PA6T / PA9T / PA46 / HTN – ideal.
  • PPA ↔ PC+PA / PA-GF – good bond.
  • PPA ↔ PPS / PBT / PEEK – partially compatible.

Incompatible with:

  • PP, PE, PVC, PS, ABS, ASA, PMMA – melting points are too low.

💡 ReplastMD Recommendation:

Use PPA rods or reinforced HTN / PA6T rods at 310–320 °C. Heat the working area uniformly — the material melts suddenly. Controlled cooling prevents internal stresses and edge cracking.

🏭 Manufacturers and Trade Names

  • Solvay: Amodel®
  • DuPont: Zytel® HTN
  • BASF: Ultramid® T
  • DSM: Stanyl® Diablo®
  • Evonik: Vestamid® HT Plus

🧠 How to Identify PPA

  • Engraved marking: >PPA<, >HTN<, >Amodel<, >Ultramid T<.
  • Rigid, dense, slightly glossy surface.
  • Softens only above 300 °C.
  • Highly resistant to scratching and deformation.
  • ReplastMD practical test: If the part is rigid, withstands hot air up to 300 °C without deformation, and is marked >PPA< – it is confirmed Polyphthalamide.
