🧩 POM+PTFE – Polyoxymethylene + PTFE (Teflon®)
(A composite material with excellent self-lubrication and an extremely low friction coefficient, resulting from the combination of POM (acetal) and PTFE (teflon). It offers hardness, precision, and wear resistance, used in bearings, sliders, and gears.)
🔹 What is POM+PTFE
POM+PTFE is a technical material created by dispersing fine Teflon (PTFE) particles within a Polyoxymethylene (POM) matrix. This combination grants exceptional tribological properties—a very low friction coefficient, permanent self-lubrication, and minimal wear even without external oiling. It is dimensionally stable and provides silent operation, making it ideal for precision rotating or sliding parts.
🔧 Composition & Properties
- Base: 80–95% POM, 5–20% PTFE.
- Density: 1.45–1.50 g/cm³.
- Melting Point: ≈ 165–175 °C.
- Friction Coefficient: < 0.15 (very low).
- Chemical Resistance: Excellent (oils, fuels, solvents, water).
🚗 Where POM+PTFE is used in the automotive industry
| Component | Example parts | Observations |
| Moving Mechanisms | Sliders, gears, bearings | Excellent anti-friction, silent operation |
| Locking Systems | Levers, linkages, controls | Precision and smooth movement |
| Interior Systems | Guides, supports, sun roofs | Self-lubricating, maintenance-free |
| Technical Parts | Bushings, rollers, pads | Durability and low wear |
🔧 Welding Temperature and Methods
| Method | Optimal Temp | Observations |
| Hot Air | 250 – 270 °C | Fast melting, moderate airflow |
| Plastic Extrusion | 240 – 260 °C | Suitable for thick parts |
| Heat Plate (Mirror) | 240 – 260 °C | Clean bond, watch the pressure |
🔩 Material Compatibility
- ✅ Compatible: POM, POM-C, POM-H, Delrin® AF, Hostaform® PTFE.
- ⚠️ Good Compatibility: POM+PA, POM+PBT, reinforced POM.
- ❌ Incompatible: PA, PP, PE, PVC, ABS, PC (completely different melting points).
💡 ReplastMD Recommendation: Use POM or POM+PTFE rods at 260 °C. Clean the surface with isopropyl alcohol before welding. Apply uniform pressure—PTFE has low adhesion and can migrate if overheated.
🧠 How to Identify POM+PTFE
- Engraved marking: >POM+PTFE<, >POM/TEFLON<, >DELRIN AF<.
- Texture: Semi-glossy, dense, very smooth.
- ReplastMD practical test: Surface is extremely slippery and non-stick. Burns with a blue flame and a faint formaldehyde scent. Softens at ≈ 170 °C.
