🧩 PMMA+PA – Polymethyl Methacrylate + Polyamide

(Specialized technical blend combining acrylic gloss and rigidity (PMMA) with the mechanical strength, flexibility, and thermal stability of polyamide (PA6 / PA66). Used in automotive applications requiring aesthetics, toughness, and chemical resistance.)

🔹 What is PMMA+PA

PMMA+PA is an advanced technical blend resulting from the mixture of PMMA (acrylic) and PA (polyamide). The result is a high-gloss material with increased durability, resistance to oils and fuels, and good flexibility. This type of plastic is rare and used in applications requiring a balance between aesthetic appearance and mechanical performance.

🔧 Composition

  • PMMA (Polymethyl Methacrylate): 40–60 %
  • PA (Polyamide 6 or 66): 40–60 %
  • Compatibilizers / Stabilizers: 1–3 %
  • Density: 1.12–1.18 g/cm³
  • Softening Point: ≈ 220–250 °C
  • Chemical Resistance: Very good (oils, fuels, mild solvents).
  • Continuous Heat Resistance: 120–130 °C.

🔧 Welding Temperature and Methods

MethodOptimal TemperatureObservations

Heat Plate (Mirror)240 – 260 °CClean joint, no deformations
Manual Extrusion240 – 260 °CSuitable for structural areas

🔩 What to Weld PMMA+PA With (Material Compatibility)

As a hybrid material, compatibility depends on the PA/PMMA ratio. Generally, it adheres well to technical materials.

Compatible with:

  • PMMA+PA ↔ PA6 / PA66 / PMMA / PC+PA / PMMA+ABS – good bond.
  • PMMA+PA ↔ PC+PBT / PC+PET / PC+ASA – partially compatible.

Incompatible with:

  • PP, PE, PVC, PS, simple ABS, TPO – different melting points and densities.

💡 ReplastMD Recommendation:

Use PMMA+PA rods or technical PA66 rods at 255–270 °C. Controlled heating is crucial: PMMA can turn matte at temperatures that are too high. Slow cooling prevents cracking due to polyamide shrinkage.

🏭 Manufacturers and Trade Names

  • SABIC: Xenoy® AM / Lexan® PA Blend
  • Covestro: Makroblend® PA-PMMA
  • LG Chem: LUPOY® PMMA+PA

🧠 How to Identify PMMA+PA

  • Engraved marking: >PMMA+PA<, >PA/PMMA<, >Xenoy AM<.
  • Glossy, rigid, slightly elastic surface.
  • Faint nylon smell during burning.
  • Softens at ≈ 250 °C without bubbling.
  • ReplastMD practical test: if the part has an acrylic gloss but is slightly elastic and smells of nylon, it is a confirmed technical hybrid material.
