🧩 PLA+PHA – Bio-Blend (Biodegradable)
(Biocompatible and compostable material produced via bio-fermentation. Designed for applications requiring a balance between hardness and elasticity. PLA+PHA is used for lightweight covers and bio-interior panels, offering a glossy and dense finish.)
🔹 What is PLA+PHA
PLA+PHA is a bio-hybrid blend combining Polylactic Acid (PLA) with PHA biopolymers (e.g., PHB, PHBV). At ReplastMD, we use this blend because the PHA component adds much-needed flexibility and impact resistance, significantly reducing the brittleness of pure PLA. The material boasts a high natural gloss and controlled thermal behavior, making it easily weldable at low temperatures.
🔧 Composition & Properties
- Polymer Base: PLA + PHA.
- Source: Bio-fermentation (sugar, vegetable oils, starch).
- Density: 1.23 – 1.26 g/cm³.
- Melting Point: 150 – 170 °C.
- Operating Range: –10 °C to +90 °C.
- Chemical Resistance: Good (oils, greases, cold detergents).
🚗 Where PLA+PHA is used in the automotive industry
| Component | Example parts | Observations |
| Bio Covers | Protectors, plugs, inserts | Elastic, resistant, and biodegradable |
| Decorative Trim | Interior panels, plates, handles | High gloss, smooth, ecological |
| Bio Films | Protective foils, coatings | Compostable, clear |
| Prototyping | Eco-demo components | Bio-alternative to PP/ABS |
🔧 Welding Temperature and Methods
| Method | Optimal Temp | Observations |
| Hot Air | ✅ 110 – 130 °C | Welds slowly and cleanly, smoke-free |
| Heat Plate (Mirror) | ✅ 120 – 130 °C | Smooth, glossy bonding |
| Manual Extrusion | ⚠️ 130 – 140 °C | Possible, requires constant pressure |
| Chemical Bonding | ✅ Recommended | Bio-polyester or epoxy adhesives |
💡 ReplastMD Recommendation: PLA+PHA is best welded at 120 °C with hot air, resulting in a smooth, clear, and glossy joint. Maintain constant pressure during cooling to ensure structural integrity.
