🧩 PLA+PBS – Rigid-Flexible Biodegradable Biopolymer
(A blend of compatible biopolymers composed of Polylactic Acid (PLA) and Polybutylene Succinate (PBS). Designed for applications requiring the mechanical strength and gloss of PLA, but with the added flexibility of PBS.)
🔹 What is PLA+PBS
PLA+PBS is one of the most widely used eco-composites in the new generation of bio-plastics. At ReplastMD, we treat it as an optimized structural bio-material. While pure PLA is rigid but brittle, the addition of PBS brings impact resistance and dimensional stability. This makes it a perfect thermoplastic for automotive interior panels and decorative housings where sustainability meets performance.
🔧 Composition & Properties
- Polymer Base: PLA (60–80%) + PBS (20–40%).
- Density: ~ 1.23–1.27 g/cm³.
- Processing Temp: 180 – 200 °C.
- Chemical Group: Aliphatic polyesters.
- Scent: Sweet smell when heated (burnt sugar).
🚗 Where it is used in the automotive industry
| Component | Example parts | Observations |
| Interior Decorative Panels | Toyota, Hyundai | Glossy look, fully biodegradable |
| Sensor Covers / Housings | Renault, VW | Alternative to conventional PP / ABS |
| Eco-Prototypes | BMW, ReplastMD | Bio-based material, easy to machine |
| Technical Packaging | OEM & Aftermarket | Flexible and dimensionally stable |
🔧 Welding Temperature and Methods
| Method | Optimal Temp | Observations |
| Hot Air | 180 – 200 °C | Easy to weld, but sensitive to overheating |
| Heat Plate (Mirror) | ✅ Ideal | Clean and uniform joint, no caramelization |
| Welding Rod | ✅ Recommended | Use matching PLA+PBS or pure PLA rod |
| Ultrasonic | ⚠️ Limited | Only possible for thin-walled components |
💡 ReplastMD Recommendation: Weld at ~190 °C using a PLA+PBS or compatible PLA rod. The material offers a pleasant gloss and light elasticity, making it ideal for decorative parts, eco-caps, and prototype applications requiring genuine biodegradability.
