🧩 PHA+GF – Glass Fiber Reinforced Bio-Polymer
(A composite biodegradable material made of Polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) reinforced with glass fiber (GF). Designed for technical applications requiring biodegradability combined with high mechanical and thermal resistance.)
🔹 What is PHA+GF
PHA+GF is an innovative technical biopolymer. At ReplastMD, we treat it as the sustainable equivalent of industrial PP-GF. By adding 10–30% glass fiber, the rigidity, impact resistance, and heat deflection temperature are significantly increased, while maintaining its biodegradable nature in soil or compost. It is increasingly used for rigid housings, brackets, and structural interior parts in eco-friendly vehicle designs.
🔧 Composition & Properties
- Polymer Base: Polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) 70–90%.
- Reinforcement: E-Glass Fiber 10–30%.
- Density: ~ 1.30–1.40 g/cm³.
- Processing Temp: 180 – 200 °C.
- Scent: Sweet vegetal scent when heated (burnt oil).
🚗 Where it is used in the automotive industry
| Component | Example parts | Observations |
| Rigid Technical Covers | Toyota, Hyundai | Bio-alternative to PP-GF20 |
| Sensor Brackets | Renault, Peugeot | High rigidity, low weight |
| Interior Decorative Trim | VW, BMW | Natural glossy finish, biodegradable |
| Structural Prototypes | ReplastMD / OEM | Sustainable, easy to machine |
🔧 Welding Temperature and Methods
| Method | Optimal Temp | Observations |
| Hot Air | 180 – 200 °C | Easy to weld, but sensitive to overheating |
| Heat Plate (Mirror) | ✅ Ideal | Clean joint without browning the polymer |
| Welding Rod | ✅ Recommended | Use matching PHA+GF or pure PHA rod |
| Ultrasonic | ⚠️ Limited | Risk of uneven melting due to glass fibers |
💡 ReplastMD Recommendation: Weld at ~190 °C using a PHA+GF rod. Avoid concentrated hot air flow for extended periods to prevent “caramelization” of the material. It offers a natural satin look and excellent structural strength for all high-end eco-projects.
