🧩 PET+BIO – Bio-based Polyethylene Terephthalate
PET+BIO is a sustainable and recyclable material obtained by partially replacing petrochemical components in standard PET with renewable raw materials such as bio-glycol or vegetable-based terephthalic acid. PET+BIO offers the same performance as classic PET but with a reduced environmental impact, being used in housings, covers, frames, and eco-friendly automotive components.
🔹 What is PET+BIO PET+BIO is an ecological version of Polyethylene Terephthalate, where a portion of the ethylene glycol (EG) or terephthalic acid (PTA) is derived from biological sources (e.g., sugarcane, corn, biomass). This material retains the technical properties of standard PET while reducing the carbon footprint by 30–60% and remains 100% compatible with conventional recycling streams.
🔧 Composition and Properties
- Composition: 70–90% PET, 10–30% Bio-based components.
- Density: 1.35–1.40 g/cm³.
- Melting Point: ≈ 250 °C.
- Chemical Resistance: Excellent (oils, solvents, fuels).
- Continuous Thermal Resistance: 120–140 °C.
🚗 Automotive Applications
- Ecological OEM Parts: Housings, sensor covers, frames (durable and recyclable).
- Technical/Decorative Interior: Covers, panels, diffusers (clean, glossy, eco finish).
- Electrical Systems: Connector housings, relay supports (insulation and thermal stability).
- Light Exterior: Frames, technical covers (UV resistance and moderate impact).
🔧 Welding Temperature and Methods
- Hot Air: 260 – 270 °C (uniform melting, no strong odor).
- Heat Plate: 250 – 265 °C (clean joint, no porosity).
- Manual Extrusion: 250 – 265 °C (suitable for thick parts).
🔩 Welding Compatibility
- ✅ Excellent Compatibility: PET, PBT, PBT+PET, PBT+BIO, PET+PC, PC+PET, POM+PBT.
- ✅ Good Compatibility: PETG, PC+PBT, PBT+FR.
- ❌ Incompatible: PP, PE, PS, ABS, PMMA, PVC, PA.
💡 ReplastMD Recommendation: Use PET or PBT welding rod at 265 °C. Heat gradually, as PET+BIO has slightly lower thermal conductivity. Avoid overheating, which can lead to natural yellowing of the material.
