🧩 PEI+PC – Polyetherimide + Polycarbonate

(High-performance technical plastic, weldable, rigid, and heat-resistant. Used in sensor housings, connectors, and automotive structural components.)

🔹 What is PEI+PC

PEI+PC is a high-performance hybrid blend designed for applications requiring a balance of rigidity, thermal stability, and impact strength. PEI contributes rigidity and chemical resistance, while PC ensures toughness and better processability. The result is a dimensionally stable material with minimal shrinkage, excellent resistance to temperatures over 200°C, and predictable behavior in structural or electrical applications.

🔧 Composition & Properties

  • Composition: 60–70% Polyetherimide (PEI), 30–40% Polycarbonate (PC).
  • Density: 1.30–1.40 g/cm³.
  • Vicat Softening Temperature: ≈ 200–210 °C.
  • Chemical Resistance: Excellent (oils, solvents, fuels).
  • Continuous Heat Resistance: 190–210 °C.

🚗 Where PEI+PC is used in the automotive industry

ComponentExample partsObservations
Electrical / SensorsSensor covers, ECU, connectorsExcellent insulation and high rigidity
Engine / ThermalPump covers, valves, mountsThermal stability over 200 °C
Technical StructuresClips, housings, fastenersRigid, dense, low deformation
Interior PartsAesthetic covers, OEM partsMatte finish, thermal shock resistant

🔧 Welding Temperature and Methods

MethodOptimal TempObservations
Hot Air340 – 360 °CUniform melting, controlled flow
Plastic Extrusion330 – 350 °CPEI, PEI+PC, or PPS+PEI rods
Heat Plate (Mirror)330 – 350 °CClean bond, zero oxidation

🔩 Material Compatibility

  • Compatible: PEI, PEI+GF, PPSU, PSU, PES, PPS+PEI, PEEK.
  • ⚠️ Good Compatibility: PC, PC+ABS, PC+PBT, PC+ASA.
  • Incompatible: PP, PE, PS, ABS, PVC, PET (completely different melting points).

💡 ReplastMD Recommendation: Use PEI or PEI+PC rods at 350°C. Heat uniformly to avoid carbonization; slow cooling prevents internal stresses and results in a dense, professional bond.

🧠 How to Identify PEI+PC

  • Engraved marking: >PEI+PC<, >ULTEM PC BLEND<, >ULTRASON PC<.
  • Texture: Semi-glossy, dense, heavier than standard PC.
  • ReplastMD practical test: Rigid, dense, and does not deform under 200°C hot air. Burns with a clean flame and a faint imide scent.
