🧩 PE-UHMW – Ultra-High Molecular Weight Polyethylene
(Premium technical plastic, nearly indestructible, used in automotive and industrial parts with extreme wear, friction, and high impact)
🔹 What is PE-UHMW
PE-UHMW (Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene) is a polyethylene with an ultra-high molecular weight, exceeding 3,000,000 g/mol.
It has 10x higher resistance to wear, abrasion, and impact than regular polyethylene (PE-HD) and a very low friction coefficient, similar to Teflon. Due to these properties, it is used in protective automotive components, guides, slides, and anti-friction parts where other materials fail.
🔧 Composition
- PE-HD (base) – dense polyethylene with ultra-long chains
- Molecular Weight: > 3,000,000 g/mol
- Additives: Solid lubricants, anti-statics, UV stabilizers
- Density: 0.93–0.94 g/cm³
- Melting Point: ≈ 135 °C (not fully fusible)
🚗 Where PE-UHMW is used in the automotive industry
| Component | Example parts | Observations |
| Mechanical Protection | Slides, mounts, anti-friction inserts | Extremely wear-resistant |
| Engine Compartment | Guide parts, covers, vibration insulators | Low friction coefficient |
| Exterior / Body | Technical panels, deformable mounts | Durable, self-lubricating |
| Industrial / Aftermarket | Lift supports, transport liners | Exceptional impact resistance |
🔧 Welding temperatures and methods
| Method | Optimal temperature | Observations |
| Hot air | 280 – 300 °C | Very difficult weld – partial melting |
| Heat plate (mirror) | 270 – 290 °C | Only possible with high pressure |
| Manual extrusion | — | Inefficient – viscosity is too high |
| Special adhesives | — | Recommended for minor repairs |
| Mechanical joining | — | Preferred solution in most cases |
🔩 What to weld PE-UHMW with (Material compatibility)
“What to weld PE-UHMW with” is a common question, but it must be clearly stated:
👉 This material does not weld effectively through standard thermal methods.
It can only be joined with the same type of material (UHMW) using special equipment.
✅ Compatible (Industrial only):
- PE-UHMW ↔ PE-UHMW – only with industrial high-pressure equipment
- PE-UHMW ↔ PE-HMW – minimal adhesion, not recommended
❌ Incompatible:
- PP, PE-HD, ABS, ASA, PC, PA, PVC – will not bond, completely different melting points
💡 ReplastMD Recommendation:
In service repairs, we do not use classic welding. Instead, we use:
- screws, inserts, mechanical plates
- special adhesives for UHMW / PTFE
- controlled local heating for shaping or fixation, not for fusion.Safe deformation temperature: 280–290 °C, without full melting.

🧠 How to identify PE-UHMW
- Engraved marking: >PE-UHMW<, >UHMW-PE<, or >PE 1000<
- Very smooth, waxy, anti-adhesive surface
- Yellow-blue flame, faint paraffin smell
- Does not scratch easily with a fingernail or screwdriver
- Does not melt completely, only softens slowly at 290 °C
