🧩 PE-HMW – High Molecular Weight Polyethylene
(High-performance weldable plastic, extremely resistant to wear, abrasion, and impact, used in heavy automotive and industrial parts)
🔹 What is PE-HMW
PE-HMW (High Molecular Weight Polyethylene) is a high-density polyethylene with a very high molecular weight, featuring much longer polymer chains than standard PE-HD.
This structure provides exceptional hardness, a low friction coefficient, and extraordinary resistance to wear and impact. In the automotive industry, PE-HMW is used in applications where parts are subjected to high friction, vibrations, and repeated impacts, such as liners, technical slides, and protections.
🔧 Composition
- PE-HD (base) – high-density polyethylene
- Molecular Weight: > 500,000 g/mol (5–10 times higher than standard PE-HD)
- Additives: UV stabilizers, anti-static agents, internal lubricants
- Density: 0.94–0.96 g/cm³
- Melting Point: ≈ 130–135 °C
🚗 Where PE-HMW is used in the automotive industry
| Component | Example parts | Observations |
| Body Protections | Liners, slides, wheel arch covers | Very high friction resistance |
| Engine Compartment | Panels, underbody guards | Stable at high temperatures and vibrations |
| Tanks / Technical Parts | Thick walls, covers, shields | Excellent hardness and rigidity |
| Aftermarket | Mounts, gaskets, anti-wear elements | Chemically inert and very durable |
🔧 Welding temperatures and methods
| Method | Optimal temperature | Observations |
| Hot air | 270 – 290 °C | Requires longer heating for complete melting |
| Heat plate (mirror) | 260 – 280 °C | Recommended for high thicknesses |
| Manual extrusion | 250 – 270 °C | Only possible with compatible HMW rod |
| Ultrasonic | — | Not recommended (high energy absorption) |
🔩 What to weld PE-HMW with (Material compatibility)
The question “what to weld PE-HMW with” arises often because this material is different from standard polyethylenes. It can only be welded with materials of the same type or molecularly similar ones.
✅ Compatible:
- PE-HMW ↔ PE-HMW – ideal combination
- PE-HMW ↔ PE-HD / PE-MD – good compatibility (but more rigid)
- PE-HMW ↔ PE-UHMW – partially possible, but melting is difficult
❌ Incompatible:
- PP, ABS, ASA, PC, PA, PVC – completely different melting points, no adhesion
💡 ReplastMD Recommendation:
Use original PE-HMW welding rods or technical-grade PE-HD at a temperature of 280 °C. Thoroughly clean the oxidized area and apply constant pressure — slow cooling prevents cracking.

🧠 How to identify PE-HMW
- Engraved marking: >PE-HMW<, >HMW-PE<, or >PE 500<
- Smooth, very hard surface with a waxy-matte appearance
- Yellow-blue flame, faint paraffin smell
- Does not scratch easily with a fingernail
- Melts slowly at 280 °C, without smoke or bubbles
