🧩 PBT+BIO – Bio-based Polybutylene Terephthalate

(A next-generation eco-friendly material, partially produced from renewable resources, maintaining the same mechanical and thermal properties as classic PBT. Used in ecological automotive parts to reduce the carbon footprint.)

🔹 What is PBT+BIO

PBT+BIO is a modern version of Polybutylene Terephthalate where petrochemical components are partially replaced by plant-derived monomers (such as bio-butanediol obtained from sugars). The resulting material offers identical mechanical, thermal, and chemical resistance as standard PBT, but with reduced CO₂ emissions. It is fully recyclable and compatible with standard PBT, making it ideal for eco-friendly OEM parts.

🔧 Composition & Properties

  • Base: 70–90% PBT, 10–30% Bio-based components.
  • Density: 1.30–1.40 g/cm³.
  • Melting Point: ≈ 220–225 °C.
  • Chemical Resistance: Excellent (oils, fuels, solvents).
  • Continuous Heat Resistance: 120–140 °C.

🚗 Where PBT+BIO is used in the automotive industry

ComponentExample partsObservations
Eco OEM PartsCovers, frames, sensor housingsEqual performance to standard PBT
Technical InteriorPanels, covers, mountsGlossy finish, rigid, recyclable
Electrical SystemsConnectors, housings, guidesThermal stability and good insulation
Engine BayClips, brackets, coversHigh chemical resistance

🔧 Welding Temperature and Methods

MethodOptimal TempObservations
Hot Air250 – 270 °CUniform melting, no excessive smoke
Plastic Extrusion240 – 260 °CSuitable for rigid technical parts
Heat Plate (Mirror)240 – 260 °CClean and stable bonding

🔩 Material Compatibility

  • Compatible: PBT, PBT+GF, PBT+PC, PBT+PET, PBT+ASA, PC+PBT.
  • ⚠️ Good Compatibility: PBT+PA, POM+PBT.
  • Incompatible: PP, PE, ABS, PVC (completely different melting points).

💡 ReplastMD Recommendation: Use standard PBT rods at 260 °C. The material behaves similarly to normal PBT but requires slightly slower heating to prevent natural yellowing.

🧠 How to Identify PBT+BIO

  • Engraved marking: >PBT+BIO<, >ULTRADUR BIO<, >VALOX ECO<, >CRASTIN BIO<.
  • Texture: Glossy, slightly pearlescent surface.
  • ReplastMD practical test: Burns with a yellow-blue flame and a faint vegetable ester scent. Softens at ≈ 220 °C.
