🧩 PBT+ASA – Polybutylene Terephthalate + Acrylonitrile Styrene Acrylate
(A UV and weather-resistant composite material resulting from the blend of PBT (rigid polyester) and ASA (sun-resistant acrylic polymer). PBT+ASA offers dimensional stability, chemical resistance, and high impact strength for exterior parts.)
🔹 What is PBT+ASA
PBT+ASA is a compatibilized blend where PBT ensures rigidity and chemical resistance, while ASA provides UV resistance and long-term color retention. The result is an impact-resistant material that thrives under sunlight and atmospheric agents. It features a durable, glossy finish, making it perfect for exterior components permanently exposed to the sun and temperature fluctuations.
🔧 Composition & Properties
- Base: 60–80% PBT, 20–40% ASA.
- Density: 1.20–1.35 g/cm³.
- Melting Point: ≈ 220–230 °C.
- Chemical Resistance: Excellent (oils, fuels, solvents).
- Continuous Heat Resistance: 110–130 °C.
🚗 Where PBT+ASA is used in the automotive industry
| Component | Example parts | Observations |
| Body Exterior | Mirror caps, grille frames | UV and yellowing resistance |
| Headlights / Lighting | Decorative masks, supports | Thermally and aesthetically stable |
| Technical Trim | Glossy panels and covers | Clean finish, no shrinkage |
| Structural Parts | Rigid mounts, tech covers | Balanced stiffness and impact |
🔧 Welding Temperature and Methods
| Method | Optimal Temp | Observations |
| Hot Air | 250 – 270 °C | Uniform melting, avoid burning the gloss |
| Plastic Extrusion | 240 – 260 °C | Suitable for large, rigid parts |
| Heat Plate (Mirror) | 240 – 260 °C | Clean, controlled bonding |
🔩 Material Compatibility
- ✅ Compatible: PBT, PBT+PC, PBT+PET, ASA, ASA+PC, PC+PBT.
- ⚠️ Good Compatibility: ABS+ASA, PA+PBT.
- ❌ Incompatible: PP, PE, PS, PMMA, PVC (completely different melting points).
💡 ReplastMD Recommendation: Use PBT or PC+PBT rods at 260–270 °C. Avoid overheating to prevent the ASA component from losing its gloss. Maintain constant flow and moderate pressure for an aesthetic joint.
🧠 How to Identify PBT+ASA
- Engraved marking: >PBT+ASA<, >ULTRADUR<, >XENOY<, >VALOX<.
- Texture: Glossy, hard, smooth to the touch.
- ReplastMD practical test: If the part is glossy and rigid with a PBT+ASA mark, it is confirmed. Softens at ≈ 225 °C and has a slight acrylic scent when burned.
