🧩 PBS+PLA – Poly(butylene succinate) + Poly(lactide) – Composite Biopolymer
(A biodegradable biopolymer blend made of PBS and PLA, designed to combine the mechanical strength of PLA with the flexibility and processability of PBS. Used as an ecological alternative to PP, PET, and ABS.)
🔹 What is PBS+PLA
PBS+PLA is a compatible bio-hybrid blend. At ReplastMD, we treat this material as an optimized balance between hardness and elasticity. PBS (aliphatic polyester) provides impact resistance and flexibility, while PLA provides high rigidity, gloss, and mechanical strength. It is increasingly used in modern automotive interiors for lightweight parts where biodegradability and a premium finish are required.
🔧 Composition & Properties
- Polymer Base: PBS (40–60%) + PLA (40–60%).
- Density: ~ 1.25 g/cm³.
- Thermal Window: 180 – 210 °C for processing.
- Chemical Group: Aliphatic polyesters.
- Scent: Sweet smell when heated (burnt sugar/lactate).
🚗 Where it is used in the automotive industry
| Component | Example parts | Observations |
| Light Interior Trim | Toyota, Hyundai | Decorative parts, consoles, sensor housings |
| Protective Covers | Renault, VW | Ecological alternative to PP / ABS |
| Service Caps | OEM & Aftermarket | Good rigidity and structural stability |
| Temporary Parts | Internal Prototypes | Easy to process via CNC or 3D printing |
🔧 Welding Temperature and Methods
| Method | Optimal Temp | Observations |
| Hot Air | 180 – 210 °C | Easy to weld, but sensitive to overheating |
| Heat Plate (Mirror) | ✅ Ideal | Precise control, uniform bonding |
| Welding Rod | ✅ Recommended | Use identical PBS+PLA or compatible PBS |
| Ultrasonic | ⚠️ Limited | Possible on small parts, risk of stress cracks |
💡 ReplastMD Recommendation: Weld at ~200 °C using a PBS+PLA rod. Avoid excessive heat, as the material can undergo thermal degradation and lose its clarity or structural properties. Perfect for aesthetic repairs on eco-friendly interior accents.
