🧩 PBSA+PLA – Flexible Biodegradable Biopolymer
(A biodegradable polyester blend composed of Polybutylene Succinate-co-Adipate (PBSA) and Poly(lactide) (PLA). It combines the elasticity of PBSA with the rigidity and superior gloss of PLA.)
🔹 What is PBSA+PLA
PBSA+PLA is a compatible bio-hybrid blend. At ReplastMD, we treat this material as the perfect balance for parts requiring “gentle elasticity” without losing their structural integrity. PBSA provides the impact resistance and soft touch, while PLA ensures dimensional stability and a premium finish. It is 100% biodegradable and processes beautifully through injection molding.
🔧 Composition & Properties
- Polymer Base: PBSA (40–60%) + PLA (40–60%).
- Density: ~ 1.22–1.26 g/cm³.
- Processing Temp: 170 – 190 °C.
- Chemical Group: Aliphatic polyesters.
- Scent: Sweet sugar/lactate smell when heated.
🚗 Where it is used in the automotive industry
| Component | Example parts | Observations |
| Interior Caps / Shields | Toyota, Hyundai | Replaces PP / ABS in bio-applications |
| Aesthetic Panels | Renault, VW | High gloss, fine surface finish |
| Technical Packaging | Sensor housings | Biodegradable, rigid yet flexible |
| Eco-Prototypes | ReplastMD internal | Easy to machine and reshape with heat |
🔧 Welding Temperature and Methods
| Method | Optimal Temp | Observations |
| Hot Air | 170 – 190 °C | Easy to weld, uniform melt, low burn risk |
| Heat Plate (Mirror) | ✅ Ideal | Clean and controlled bonding |
| Welding Rod | ✅ Recommended | Use matching PBSA or PBSA+PLA rod |
| Ultrasonic | ⚠️ Limited | Only for small parts under 2 mm thickness |
💡 ReplastMD Recommendation: Weld at ~180 °C using a PBSA+PLA rod. This material offers excellent impact resistance and moderate elasticity. It is perfect for decorative repairs, caps, or any eco-component project at ReplastMD.
