🧩 PARA / MXD6 – Aromatic Polyamide
(A high-performance aromatic polyamide known for its exceptional rigidity, chemical resistance, and dimensional stability at high temperatures. Used in precision technical parts where standard PA6 or PA66 lack sufficient stability.)
🔹 What is PARA / MXD6
PARA (Polyarylamide) or PA MXD6 is a semi-aromatic polyamide obtained from adipic acid and m-xylylenediamine (MXDA). Its aromatic structure provides a melting point of ~250 °C, low water absorption, and a low thermal expansion coefficient. It behaves similarly to PPA (Polyphthalamide), making it ideal for engine parts, connectors, and precision structural elements.
🔧 Composition
| Component | Typical Ratio | Role |
| MXD6 Aromatic Matrix | ≈ 70 % | Rigid matrix, heat and chemical resistant |
| Glass Fiber (E-Glass) | ≈ 30 % | Mechanical reinforcement, reduces warping |
| Additives | < 3 % | Oxidation protection and dimensional stability |
🚗 Where PARA / MXD6 is used in the automotive industry
| Component | Example parts | Observations |
| Sensor Housings | Bosch, Continental | Dimensionally stable, excellent insulation |
| Fuel Fittings / Parts | Toyota, Honda | Hydrocarbon and alcohol resistance |
| Pump / EGR Housings | Nissan, Peugeot | Rigidity at 200 °C+ |
| Fine Mechanical Parts | VW, Renault | Precise tolerances, no thermal warping |
🔧 Welding Temperature and Methods
| Method | Optimal Temp | Observations |
| Hot Air | 270 – 290 °C | Requires preheating to prevent cracking |
| Heat Plate (Mirror) | 260 – 280 °C | Ideal – Clean, uniform bonding |
| Plastic Extrusion | 280 °C | Recommended – use identical or compatible rod |
🔩 Material Compatibility
- ✅ Compatible: PARA, MXD6, PA6-MX, PA6I/6T.
- ⚠️ Partially Compatible: PA66, PA6, PPA (melting point/flow differences).
- ❌ Incompatible: PA12, PP, PE, PBT, PVC (chemically and thermally incompatible).
💡 ReplastMD Recommendation: Weld at ~280 °C using PARA / MXD6 rods. The material is very hard; preheating the part is essential to maintain dimensional stability and prevent stress fractures.
🧠 How to Identify PARA / MXD6
- Engraved marking: > PARA <, > MXD6 <, > GRIVORY MXD6 <, > RENY <.
- Texture: Very rigid, matte, visible glass fibers.
- ReplastMD practical test: Produces a clear, “metallic” sound when tapped. Brittle when cut, with smooth edges and no elasticity.
