🧩 PA+PPS – Polyamide + Polyphenylene Sulfide

(High-performance technical blend joining the mechanical strength of polyamide with the exceptional thermal and chemical stability of PPS. Used in engine components, sensors, and connectors exposed to extreme temperatures and corrosive substances.)

🔹 What is PA+PPS

PA+PPS is a high-strength polymer blend. Polyamide contributes adhesion and processability, while PPS provides thermal stability, rigidity, and chemical resistance. The result is an ultra-stable, anti-corrosive material with minimal shrinkage and near-zero water absorption — ideal for high-precision engine parts and electrical systems.

🔧 Composition

  • Polyamide (PA6 / PA66): 30–50 %
  • Polyphenylene Sulfide (PPS): 50–70 %
  • Additives: compatibilizers, glass fiber (20–40 %), thermal stabilizers.
  • Density: 1.35–1.55 g/cm³ (high density).
  • Melting Point: ≈ 270–285 °C.
  • Chemical Resistance: Excellent (oils, acids, fuels, antifreeze).
  • Continuous Heat Resistance: 160–200 °C.

🚗 Where PA+PPS is used in the automotive industry

ComponentExample partsObservations
Engine / TechnicalSensor covers, air distributors, pumpsExceptional heat and chemical resistance
Electrical SystemsConnectors, ECU housings, coil partsExcellent insulation, thermal stability
Transmission / Mech.Covers, supports, guidesDimensional stability, high hardness
Turbo / EGR ZonesStructural elementsConstant behavior up to 200 °C

🔧 Welding Temperature and Methods

MethodOptimal TemperatureObservations
Hot Air280 – 300 °CSlow melting, requires part preheating
Heat Plate (Mirror)270 – 290 °CPrecise joint, no oxidation
Manual Extrusion270 – 290 °CSuitable for thick technical parts

🔩 What to Weld PA+PPS With (Material Compatibility)

Compatibility is limited — PPS has a very stable structure and welds effectively only with similar materials or hybrid blends.

Compatible with:

  • PA+PPS ↔ PPS / PPS+GF / PPS+PA / PPA – ideal.
  • PA+PPS ↔ PA6 / PA66 / PA+GF – good bond.

Incompatible with:

  • PP, PE, PVC, PS, ABS, ASA – completely different melting points.

💡 ReplastMD Recommendation:

Use PA+PPS or PPS+GF rods at 290 °C. The part must be preheated to avoid thermal shock. Cool slowly to prevent micro-cracks.

🏭 Manufacturers and Trade Names

  • Fortron (Celanese): Fortron® PA/PPS
  • Toray: Torelina® PA+PPS
  • Solvay: Ryton® PA/PPS

🧠 How to Identify PA+PPS

  • Engraved marking: >PA+PPS<, >PPS<, >Ryton<, >Fortron<.
  • Matte surface, hard, black or dark grey.
  • Very dense, does not float in water.
  • Yellow-blue flame, faint sulfur smell.
  • Softens at ≈ 280 °C without visible deformation.
  • ReplastMD practical test: If the part is heavy, rigid, does not absorb water, and is marked >PPS<, it is confirmed Polyamide + Polyphenylene Sulfide.
