🧩 PA+PMMA – Polyamide + Acrylate (PMMA)

(Transparent or semi-glossy technical blend combining the mechanical and chemical resistance of polyamide with the aesthetics and superior gloss of acrylate. Used in decorative automotive parts where transparency and a premium finish are required.)

🔹 What is PA+PMMA

PA+PMMA is a compatibilized blend between polyamide (elasticity, impact resistance) and PMMA (rigidity, gloss). Combining the two offers dimensional stability, hardness, and optical clarity, while maintaining good resistance to oils, solvents, and UV radiation. It is used in applications where visual appearance is crucial alongside durability, such as headlight frames and decorative panels.

🔧 Composition

  • Polyamide (PA6 / PA12): 50–70 %
  • PMMA (Polymethyl Methacrylate): 30–50 %
  • Additives: compatibilizers, UV stabilizers, optical dyes.
  • Density: 1.10–1.20 g/cm³.
  • Melting Point: ≈ 230–250 °C.
  • Chemical Resistance: Good (oils, mild solvents, antifreeze).
  • UV Resistance: Excellent.
  • Continuous Heat Resistance: 100–120 °C.

🔧 Welding Temperature and Methods

MethodOptimal TemperatureObservations

🔩 What to Weld PA+PMMA With (Material Compatibility)

Compatibility is good with blends containing PA or PMMA and hybrid transparent materials.

Compatible with:

  • PA+PMMA ↔ PA6 / PA12 / PA+GF / PMMA / ABS+PMMA / PC+PMMA – excellent.
  • PA+PMMA ↔ PA+ASA / PA+PC – partially compatible.

Incompatible with:

  • PP, PE, PVC, PS, pure ASA – completely different melting points.

💡 ReplastMD Recommendation:

Use PA+PMMA or transparent PMMA rods at 250 °C. Avoid overheating — PMMA can form bubbles during melting. For an optical finish, smooth the surface with a quick hot air pass and acrylic polish.

🏭 Manufacturers and Trade Names

  • BASF: Ultramid® PMMA Blend
  • Arkema: Rilsan® Clear / Altuglas® Blend
  • Covestro: Bayblend® PMMA/PA

🧠 How to Identify PA+PMMA

  • Engraved marking: >PA+PMMA<, >PA/PMMA<, >Ultramid<, >Bayblend<.
  • Glossy, rigid, transparent or opaque surface.
  • Blue flame, faint sweet (acrylic) odor.
  • Softens at ≈ 240–250 °C.
  • ReplastMD practical test: If the part is rigid, glossy, slightly transparent, and marked >PA+PMMA<, it is confirmed Polyamide + Acrylate.
