🧩 PA+PET – Polyamide + Polyethylene Terephthalate
(Technical blend combining the mechanical strength and elasticity of polyamide with the dimensional stability and rigidity of PET. A material with low shrinkage, good heat and chemical resistance.)
🔹 What is PA+PET
PA+PET is a compatibilized blend between polyamide and PET, developed for applications requiring hardness, impact resistance, and resistance to automotive fluids, but with superior dimensional stability compared to pure polyamide. PET reduces the shrinkage and water absorption of the polyamide, resulting in a material that is rigid, thermally and chemically stable. This blend is a more economical alternative to PA+PBT or PA+PPS, maintaining an optimal performance/price ratio.
🔧 Composition
- Polyamide (PA6 / PA66): 50–70 %
- PET: 30–50 %
- Additives: compatibilizers, thermal/UV stabilizers, glass fiber (10–30 %).
- Density: 1.20–1.35 g/cm³.
- Melting Point: ≈ 250–265 °C.
- Chemical Resistance: Excellent (oils, fuels, antifreeze).
- Continuous Heat Resistance: 120–140 °C.
🚗 Where PA+PET is used in the automotive industry
| Component | Example parts | Observations |
| Engine / Technical | Covers, sensor housings, pumps | Resistance to oils and vibrations |
| Electrical / Connect. | Plugs, ECU covers, guides | High dimensional stability |
| Technical Interior | Covers, frames, supports | Low shrinkage, high rigidity |
| Protected Exterior | Functional under-hood housings | Stable behavior under heat |
🔧 Welding Temperature and Methods
| Method | Optimal Temperature | Observations |
| Hot Air | 250 – 270 °C | Uniform melting, good control |
| Heat Plate (Mirror) | 240 – 260 °C | Precise joint without deformation |
| Manual Extrusion | 240 – 260 °C | Suitable for thick parts |
🔩 What to Weld PA+PET With (Material Compatibility)
Compatibility is excellent with polyamide-based materials and technical polyester blends.
✅ Compatible with:
- PA+PET ↔ PA6 / PA66 / PA+GF / PC+PBT / PA+PBT – excellent.
- PA+PET ↔ PA+MD / PA+ABS / PA+FR – very good bond.
❌ Incompatible with:
- PP, PE, PVC, PS, pure ASA – different melting points.
💡 ReplastMD Recommendation:
Use standard PA66 rods or PA+PET rods at 260 °C. Lightly preheat the area to avoid internal stresses. Let the part cool naturally for a dense and stable weld.
🏭 Manufacturers and Trade Names
- BASF: Ultramid® PET Blend
- SABIC: Xenoy®
- Covestro: Bayblend® PET/PA
- DuPont: Crastin® PA/PET
🧠 How to Identify PA+PET
- Engraved marking: >PA+PET<, >PA/PET<, >Ultramid<, >Xenoy<.
- Matte or semi-glossy surface, rigid.
- Blue flame, faint nylon smell.
- Softens at ≈ 260 °C without bubbling.
- ReplastMD practical test: If the part is rigid, dense, has low shrinkage, and is marked >PA+PET<, it is confirmed Polyamide + PET.
