🧩 PA+PC – Polyamide + Polycarbonate Blend

(High-performance technical blend combining the mechanical and thermal resistance of polyamide (PA6 / PA66) with the toughness and dimensional stability of polycarbonate (PC). Used in technical parts, housings, and connectors where hardness and impact resistance are required.)

🔹 What is PA+PC

PA+PC is a polymer alloy (blend) of polyamide and polycarbonate, achieved through controlled compatibilization. The result is a material with high toughness, impact resistance, thermal stability, and lower moisture absorption compared to pure PA. Due to its hybrid structure, PA+PC is used in sensor housings, structural parts, and electrical connectors.

🔧 Composition

  • Polyamide (PA6 / PA66): 50–70 %
  • Polycarbonate (PC): 30–50 %
  • Additives: UV/thermal stabilizers, compatibilizers, glass fibers (optional).
  • Density: 1.15–1.25 g/cm³.
  • Melting Point: ≈ 250–270 °C.
  • Chemical Resistance: Very good (oils, fuels, mild solvents).
  • Continuous Heat Resistance: 120–140 °C.

🔩 What to Weld PA+PC With (Material Compatibility)

Compatibility is high with PA and PC-based blends, making it a versatile material in hybrid repairs.

Compatible with:

  • PA+PC ↔ PA6 / PA66 / PC / ABS+PC / PA+GF / PC+ABS – excellent.
  • PA+PC ↔ PBT / PET / PA66/6 / PA+ASA – partially compatible.

Incompatible with:

  • PP, PE, PVC, PS, pure ASA – different melting points.

💡 ReplastMD Recommendation:

Use PA+PC or ABS+PC rods (Bayblend®, Cycoloy®) at 265–275 °C. Maintain constant airflow and avoid overheating the polycarbonate (it can form bubbles). Allow for slow cooling after welding to prevent internal stresses.

🏭 Manufacturers and Trade Names

  • SABIC: Cycoloy®
  • Covestro: Bayblend® PA/PC
  • LG Chem: LUPOY® PA+PC

🧠 How to Identify PA+PC

  • Engraved marking: >PA+PC<, >PA/PC<, >Bayblend<, >Cycoloy<.
  • Semi-glossy surface, rigid, dense.
  • Blue flame with a faint nylon and phenol smell.
  • Softens at ≈ 260 °C.
  • ReplastMD practical test: If the part is rigid, slightly glossy, dense, and marked >PA+PC<, it is a confirmed Polyamide + Polycarbonate blend.
