🧩 PA+GF20 – Polyamide 20% Glass Fiber
(Reinforced polyamide with 20% glass fiber, designed for superior hardness, heat resistance, and dimensional stability. One of the most common technical variants used in covers, supports, clips, and structural automotive parts.)
🔹 What is PA+GF20
PA+GF20 is a reinforced polyamide (PA6 or PA66) where 20% of the total mass consists of short glass fibers. This reinforcement improves rigidity, mechanical strength, and dimensional stability, while maintaining a good level of resilience and processability. It is widely used in parts subjected to mechanical and thermal stress, where simple plastic would be too flexible or unstable.
🔧 Composition
- Polyamide (PA6 / PA66): 80 %
- Glass Fibers (GF): 20 %
- Additives: UV stabilizers, lubricants, technical dyes.
- Density: 1.25–1.35 g/cm³
- Melting Point: ≈ 250–260 °C.
- Chemical Resistance: Excellent (oils, fuels, antifreeze).
- Continuous Heat Resistance: 120–140 °C.
🚗 Where PA+GF20 is used in the automotive industry
| Component | Example parts | Observations |
| Engine / Technical | Covers, consoles, housings | High thermal stability and rigidity |
| Electrical Systems | Sensor mounts, connectors | Resistance to vibration and deformation |
| Transmission / Brake | Clips, spacers, supports | Hardness and dimensional stability |
| Technical Interior | Fastening parts, covers | Matte finish, good mechanical strength |
🔧 Welding Temperature and Methods
| Method | Optimal Temperature | Observations |
| Hot Air | 260 – 280 °C | Requires light preheating for adhesion |
| Heat Plate (Mirror) | 250 – 270 °C | Clean, rigid joint |
| Manual Extrusion | 250 – 270 °C | Ideal for long cracks and thick areas |
🔩 What to Weld PA+GF20 With (Material Compatibility)
Glass fiber reinforcement does not affect basic compatibility — PA+GF20 behaves similarly to pure polyamides.
✅ Compatible with:
- PA+GF20 ↔ PA6 / PA66 / PA610 / PA66/6 / PC+PA / PMMA+PA – ideal.
- PA+GF20 ↔ PBT / PC+PBT – partially compatible.
❌ Incompatible with:
- PP, PE, PVC, PS, ABS, ASA, pure PMMA – different melting points.
💡 ReplastMD Recommendation:
Use PA66 rods or PA66+GF20 rods at 260–270 °C. Maintain a moderate airflow to avoid burning the glass fibers. Avoid excessive melting — fibers can protrude to the surface and affect the appearance.
🏭 Manufacturers and Trade Names
- BASF: Ultramid® B3WG4 / A3WG4
- DuPont: Zytel® 70G20
- DSM: Akulon® PA6-GF20
🧠 How to Identify PA+GF20
- Engraved marking: >PA6-GF20<, >PA66-GF20<, >GF20<.
- Semi-matte surface, rigid, with a slightly fibrous look.
- Blue flame, nylon smell.
- Softens at ≈ 250 °C without bubbling.
- ReplastMD practical test: If the part is rigid, dense, and thin white fibers appear when cut → confirmed PA+GF20.
