🧩 PA+BIO – Bio-based Polyamide

(New generation polyamide, produced partially or totally from renewable sources such as castor oil. It combines the mechanical performance of classic polyamides with ecological sustainability and low water absorption.)

🔹 What is PA+BIO

PA+BIO is an eco-friendly polyamide synthesized from natural raw materials (sebacic, ricinoleic, or dodecanedioic acids). It can be derived from the PA11, PA610, PA612, or PA1010 families, offering performance similar to conventional polyamides but with a significantly reduced carbon footprint. The material provides excellent chemical and thermal resistance, dimensional stability, and good elasticity.

🔧 Composition

  • Bio-based Polyamide (PA11 / PA610 / PA1010): 100%
  • Origin: castor oil, oilseed plants.
  • Additives: UV stabilizers, dyes, natural or glass fibers (optional).
  • Density: 1.03–1.10 g/cm³.
  • Melting Point: ≈ 180–220 °C.
  • Water Absorption: <1% (very low).
  • Chemical Resistance: Excellent (oils, fuels, solvents).
  • Continuous Heat Resistance: 100–120 °C.

🔩 What to Weld PA+BIO With (Material Compatibility)

Being derived from structures similar to PA11–PA12, compatibility is very good with classic polyamides.

Compatible with:

  • PA+BIO ↔ PA11 / PA12 / PA610 / PA612 / PA66 / PA6 – excellent.
  • PA+BIO ↔ PBT / PC+PBT – partially compatible.

Incompatible with:

  • PP, PE, PVC, PS, ABS, ASA, pure PMMA – completely different melting points.

💡 ReplastMD Recommendation:

Use PA11 or PA610 bio-based rods (Rilsan® / Vestamid® Terra) at 250 °C. Preheat the part to eliminate residual moisture. Slow cooling preserves natural gloss and avoids internal stresses.

🏭 Manufacturers and Trade Names

  • Arkema: Rilsan® PA11
  • Evonik: Vestamid® Terra
  • DSM: EcoPaXX®
  • BASF: Ultramid® Balance
  • DuPont: Zytel® RS

🧠 How to Identify PA+BIO

  • Engraved marking: >PA11<, >PA610<, >BIO<, >Rilsan<, >Terra<.
  • Matte or semi-glossy surface, low density.
  • Blue flame, faint vegetable odor (castor oil).
  • Does not visibly absorb water.
  • Very elastic, no cracking when bent.
  • ReplastMD practical test: If the part is light, elastic, doesn’t deform in moisture, and is marked >BIO< / >Rilsan<, it is confirmed Bio-based Polyamide.
