🧩 PA+ABS – Polyamide + ABS Blend

(Technical blend combining the mechanical and thermal resistance of polyamide (PA6 / PA66) with the elasticity and aesthetic finish of ABS. A balanced material used in covers, frames, and decorative car parts.)

🔹 What is PA+ABS

PA+ABS is a polymer alloy (blend) of polyamide and acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene, created to offer toughness, thermal stability, and a pleasant aesthetic finish. ABS provides gloss and impact resistance, while polyamide adds rigidity, oil resistance, and higher temperature stability. It is frequently used in automotive interior and technical parts where both structural strength and a clean finish are required.

🔧 Composition

  • Polyamide (PA6 / PA66): 50–70 %
  • ABS: 30–50 %
  • Additives: UV/thermal stabilizers, compatibilizers, dyes.
  • Density: 1.10–1.18 g/cm³.
  • Melting Point: ≈ 230–250 °C.
  • Chemical Resistance: Good (oils, solvents, moderate fuels).
  • Continuous Heat Resistance: 90–110 °C.

🚗 Where PA+ABS is used in the automotive industry

ComponentExample partsObservations
Interior / DecorativeCovers, frames, panels, buttonsGlossy look, rigid and clean
Engine / TechnicalSensor housings, clips, coversGood stability and oil resistance
Electrical / Connect.Housing parts and guidesInsulation, moderate flexibility
Protected ExteriorCovers, frames, ornamentsPleasant finish, easy to paint

🔧 Welding Temperature and Methods

MethodOptimal TemperatureObservations
Hot Air240 – 260 °CRapid melting, moderate airflow
Heat Plate (Mirror)230 – 250 °CUniform, glossy joint
Manual Extrusion230 – 250 °CSuitable for thick or visible areas

🔩 What to Weld PA+ABS With (Material Compatibility)

Compatibility is very good with PA or ABS-based materials, including hybrid blends.

Compatible with:

  • PA+ABS ↔ PA6 / PA66 / ABS / ABS+PC / ABS+PA / PC+PA – excellent.
  • PA+ABS ↔ ASA / SAN / PS-HI / Bayblend® / Cycoloy® – good bond.

Incompatible with:

  • PP, PE, PVC, PBT, PET, pure PMMA – different melting points.

💡 ReplastMD Recommendation:

Use PA+ABS or standard ABS rods at 250–255 °C. Heat uniformly to avoid melting differences between the phases. You can finish the surface with a light hot air pass for gloss and smoothing.

🏭 Manufacturers and Trade Names

  • SABIC: Cycoloy®
  • Covestro: Bayblend®
  • LG Chem: LUPOY® PA+ABS

🧠 How to Identify PA+ABS

  • Engraved marking: >PA+ABS<, >PA/ABS<, >Cycoloy<, >Bayblend<.
  • Semi-glossy surface, rigid, fine texture.
  • Yellow-blue flame, sweetish styrene odor.
  • Softens at ≈ 250 °C.
  • ReplastMD practical test: If the part has a uniform gloss, bends slightly without cracking, and is marked >PA+ABS<, it is a confirmed Polyamide + ABS blend.
