📘 PA6I/6T – Semi-Aromatic Copolyamide

PA6I/6T is a semi-aromatic copolyamide obtained through the copolymerization of isophthalamide (6I) and terephthalamide (6T), offering a balance between the rigidity of aromatic polyamides and the processability of aliphatic ones. It stands out for its high temperature resistance and dimensional stability, while maintaining good flow properties during injection molding.

🔍 What is PA6I/6T PA6I/6T belongs to the range of high-performance technical polyamides designed to withstand solvents, fuels, and aggressive chemical environments, featuring a Heat Deflection Temperature (HDT) of over 230 °C. Due to its partial aromatic structure, it has low water absorption and superior dimensional stability compared to PA66. It is frequently used in automotive parts near the engine, EGR systems, electrical connectors, covers, and fittings exposed to oils or fuels.

🔧 Composition

  • Copolyamide 6I/6T (≈ 70%): Heat-resistant semi-aromatic matrix.
  • Glass Fiber (E-Glass) (≈ 30%): Mechanical and dimensional reinforcement.
  • Additives (< 3%): Thermal / UV / Lubricant additives for protection and stability.

🚗 Automotive Applications

  • Sensor covers / EGR housings: (BMW, Renault) — High thermal and chemical stability.
  • Electrical connectors / Fuel fittings: (Bosch, Valeo) — Excellent resistance to oils and fuels.
  • Radiator caps / Under-the-hood parts: (Toyota, Peugeot) — Rigidity and stability at 150–200 °C.
  • Mechatronic components / ABS sensors: (Siemens, Continental) — Good electrostatic insulation.

🔩 Welding Compatibility

  • PA6I/6T, PA6T, PA6T-MX: ✅ Compatible (Hot air or heat plate welding).
  • PA66, PA6, PPA: ⚠️ Partially compatible – melting point differences.
  • PA12, PP, PE, PBT, PVC: ❌ Incompatible chemically and thermally.

🔥 Welding PA6I/6T at ReplastMD

  • Hot Air: 280 – 300 °C (Requires preheating to prevent cracking).
  • Heat Plate: ✅ Ideal (Smooth joint without voids).
  • Extrusion / PA6I/6T Rod: ✅ Recommended (Use an identical rod for consistency).
  • Ultrasonic / Vibrational: ⚠️ Limited (Only suitable for thin parts).

💡 ReplastMD Recommendation: Weld at approximately 290 °C using PA6I/6T rod. Avoid overheating – the material becomes brittle above 310 °C.
