🧩 PA66+PE – Co-extruded Polyamide 66 + Polyethylene
(A multi-layer co-extruded material resulting from the combination of Polyamide 66 (PA66) – known for its rigidity and temperature resistance – with Polyethylene (PE), which adds flexibility and moisture barrier.)
🔹 What is PA66+PE
PA66+PE is a bi-layer or multi-layer material obtained through co-extrusion. The inner PA66 layer provides rigidity and pressure resistance, while the outer PE layer protects against moisture and chemical agents. This combination is commonly found in fuel, vacuum, and cooling hoses where high performance at elevated temperatures and an effective abrasion barrier are required.
🔧 Composition
| Layer | Material | Role |
| Inner | Polyamide 66 (PA66) | Rigidity, mechanical and thermal strength |
| Outer | Polyethylene (PE-HD / MD) | Flexibility, water and corrosion resistance |
| Intermediate | Adhesive (PE-g-MA) | Ensures chemical bonding between layers |
🚗 Where PA66+PE is used in the automotive industry
| Component | Example parts | Observations |
| Brake / Vacuum Tubes | Renault, Peugeot, BMW | Rigid inner PA66, flexible outer PE |
| Fuel / Air / EGR Lines | Bosch, Valeo, Continental | Mixed barrier for temperature and chemicals |
| Pressure Lines | Mercedes, Opel | Double layer for durability and sealing |
| Technical Fittings | VDO, Siemens | High durability, dimensional stability |
🔧 Welding Temperature and Methods
| Method | Optimal Temp | Observations |
| Hot Air | 250 – 270 °C | Welding on the PA66 layer — careful control |
| Plastic Extrusion | 240 – 260 °C | Recommended — stable outer PE behavior |
| Heat Plate (Mirror) | 240 – 260 °C | Possible only for flat terminal zones |
🔩 Material Compatibility
- ✅ Compatible: PA66, PE-HD, PE-MD, PA66/PE.
- ⚠️ Partially Compatible: PA6, PA12, PA11 (large melting point gap).
- ❌ Incompatible: PP, PVC, PC (chemically and thermally incompatible).
💡 ReplastMD Recommendation: Melt only the PA66 layer for a solid bond. The outer PE must be clean and free of oxidation. Use PA66 or PA66/PE rods at 260 °C for optimal results.
🧠 How to Identify PA66+PE
- Engraved marking: >PA66+PE<, >PA66/PE<, >VESTAMID-PE<, >ZYTEL-PE<.
- Aspect: Glossy exterior, matte interior; two layers visible in cross-section.
- ReplastMD practical test: Burns slowly with a combined scent of amide (PA) and paraffin (PE). Resists 120–140 °C continuously.
