🧩 PA612 – Polyamide 6/12
(Advanced generation polyamide with extremely low moisture absorption, excellent dimensional stability, and superior chemical resistance. Ideal for precision automotive components exposed to wet environments, chemicals, or variable temperatures.)
🔹 What is PA612
PA612 is a semi-crystalline polyamide formed from hexamethylenediamine (PA6) and dodecanedioic acid (C12). This combination results in a polyamide with longer molecular chains, which means minimal water absorption, excellent chemical resistance, and greater flexibility compared to PA66 or PA610. PA612 is a premium material for automotive applications where precision and durability under harsh conditions are essential.
🔧 Composition
- Polyamide 6/12 (PA612): 100%
- Additives: UV stabilizers, glass fibers, lubricants.
- Density: 1.05–1.09 g/cm³
- Melting Point: ≈ 215–220 °C
- Water Absorption: <1% (very low).
- Chemical Resistance: Excellent (oils, fuels, antifreeze, salts).
- Continuous Heat Resistance: 100–120 °C.
🚗 Where PA612 is used in the automotive industry
| Component | Example parts | Observations |
| Connectors / Electrical | Plugs, covers, guides | Insulation and stability in humidity |
| Fluid Systems | Hoses, pipes, fittings | Resists antifreeze and fuels |
| Engine Bay | Clips, supports, housings | Resistance to temperatures and vibrations |
| Tech / Structural | Sensor covers, precision parts | Low shrinkage, good elasticity |
🔧 Welding Temperature and Methods
| Method | Optimal Temperature | Observations |
| Hot Air | 250 – 270 °C | Easy, uniform welding |
| Heat Plate (Mirror) | 240 – 260 °C | Clean, stable joint |
| Manual Extrusion | 240 – 260 °C | Ideal for long cracks |
🔩 What to Weld PA612 With (Material Compatibility)
PA612 is compatible with most polyamides and similar technical blends.
✅ Compatible with:
- PA612 ↔ PA6 / PA66 / PA610 / PA12 / PA+GF – ideal.
- PA612 ↔ PC+PA / PMMA+PA – excellent bond.
- PA612 ↔ PBT / PET – partially compatible.
❌ Incompatible with:
- PP, PE, PVC, PS, ABS, ASA, pure PMMA – different melting and adhesion.
💡 ReplastMD Recommendation:
Use PA612 rods or technical PA12 rods at 255–270 °C. Ensure preheating of the part to eliminate residual moisture. Slow cooling helps maintain structural clarity and avoid stress.
🏭 Manufacturers and Trade Names
- Arkema: Rilsan® PA612
- DuPont: Zytel® 612
- BASF: Ultramid® 612
- Evonik: Vestamid® L
🧠 How to Identify PA612
- Engraved marking: >PA612<, >Nylon 612<, >Rilsan<, >Vestamid L<.
- Smooth surface, slightly matte, flexible.
- Blue flame with yellow tip, faint nylon smell.
- Does not visibly absorb water; low shrinkage.
- ReplastMD practical test: If the part is matte, slightly elastic, and does not deform after exposure to moisture – it is confirmed Polyamide 6/12.
