🧩 PA11+BIO – Bio-based Polyamide 11
(An eco-friendly technical polyamide obtained from renewable sources, specifically castor oil. PA11+BIO offers excellent elasticity, chemical resistance, and dimensional stability. Used in pneumatic systems, hoses, and flexible components where durability and eco-performance are required.)
🔹 What is PA11+BIO
PA11+BIO is a bio-polyamide produced from the polymerization of 11-aminoundecanoic acid, derived from castor oil (Ricinus communis). It maintains properties similar to PA12 but with a significantly reduced carbon footprint. It features low water absorption, excellent resistance to oils and fuels, and flexibility even at low temperatures, making it ideal for dynamic automotive applications.
🔧 Composition & Properties
- Base: 90–100 % Bio-based Polyamide 11.
- Density: 1.03–1.07 g/cm³.
- Melting Point: ≈ 185–190 °C.
- Chemical Resistance: Excellent (oils, fuels, solvents).
- Continuous Heat Resistance: 100–120 °C.
🚗 Where PA11+BIO is used in the automotive industry
| Component | Example parts | Observations |
| Pneumatic / Hydraulic | Lines, fittings, connectors | Superior elasticity and chemical resistance |
| Body / Exterior | Sensor covers, seals, frames | Durable and UV stable |
| Technical Interior | Flexible clips, mounts | Low shrinkage and high flexibility |
| Eco-friendly Projects | Bio-based OEM parts | Recyclable and sustainable material |
🔧 Welding Temperature and Methods
| Method | Optimal Temp | Observations |
| Hot Air | 230 – 250 °C | Uniform melting, clean weld |
| Plastic Extrusion | 230 – 250 °C | Ideal for tubes and thick parts |
| Heat Plate (Mirror) | 220 – 240 °C | Elastic and aesthetic bonding |
🔩 Material Compatibility
- ✅ Compatible: PA11, PA12, PA+MD, PA+GF, PA+BIO, PPA.
- ⚠️ Partially Compatible: PA6, PA66, PA+PPS.
- ❌ Incompatible: PP, PE, PVC, ABS (completely different melting points).
💡 ReplastMD Recommendation: Use PA11+BIO or PA12 rods at 240–250 °C. Avoid overheating as the material can soften excessively. The weld is easy to perform, resulting in a matte finish and excellent shock resistance.
🧠 How to Identify PA11+BIO
- Engraved marking: >PA11<, >PA11-BIO<, >Rilsan<, >Terra<.
- Texture: Semi-glossy, slightly flexible surface.
- ReplastMD practical test: Faint vegetable scent (castor oil) when burned. Flame is yellow-blue, melts without bubbles. Softens at ≈ 190 °C.
