🧩 FEPM – Tetrafluoroethylene Propylene Rubber (Aflas®)

(Advanced fluoroelastomer from the FKM/FPM category, featuring a unique molecular structure that provides exceptional resistance to oils, fuels, steam, and acids, maintaining elasticity up to 230 °C.)

🔹 What is FEPM

FEPM is an advanced copolymer. At ReplastMD, we treat it as the ultimate high-performance sealer. It is superior to standard Viton (FKM) in chemical stability, especially when exposed to high-temperature steam or amine-containing additives in modern lubricants. Known predominantly under the brand name Aflas®, it is the gold standard for O-rings, seals, and hoses in aggressive environments.

🔧 Composition & Properties

  • Polymer Base: Ethylene-propylene-fluorinated copolymer.
  • Density: ~ 1.65 – 1.85 g/cm³.
  • Operating Range: Up to +230 °C.
  • Chemical Resistance: Exceptional (aromatic hydrocarbons, acids, bases, ozone, and steam).
  • Visuals: Dense, smooth black rubber with slow recovery.

🚗 Where it is used in the automotive industry

ComponentExample partsObservations
EGR Seals / O-ringsToyota, Honda, VWConstant 230 °C heat resistance
Coolant / Fuel HosesBMW, FordExcellent resistance to oils and steam
Pump / Valve SealsRenault, MercedesStable sealing under high pressure
EV / Hybrid InsulationNissan, PeugeotStable dielectric behavior, high UV resistance

🔧 Welding and Bonding Methods

MethodOptimal TempObservations
Hot Air✅ 260 – 280 °CPartial melting, for surface welding only
Chemical BondingRecommendedSpecialized fluoro-adhesives (Aflas Type B)
Heat Plate⚠️ LimitedMaterial degrades quickly above 300 °C

💡 ReplastMD Recommendation: FEPM is rarely welded in the traditional sense; instead, it is thermochemically bonded at ~270 °C using specialized adhesives for fluoroelastomers. It is the ideal choice for high-pressure seals, gaskets, and hoses exposed to oil, steam, or acids at extreme temperatures.
