🧩 ETFE – Ethylene Tetrafluoroethylene

(Semi-transparent fluoroplastic with high mechanical strength, combining the elasticity of ethylene with the chemical inertness of fluoropolymers. It is significantly tougher than PTFE, PFA, or FEP.)

🔹 What is ETFE

ETFE (Ethylene Tetrafluoroethylene) is a copolymer that offers a unique balance of properties: it is as chemically resistant as other fluoropolymers but 5 to 10 times more impact-resistant than PTFE. It is lightweight, UV-stable, and has excellent optical clarity, making it the top choice for protective sleeves, high-performance cables, and technical membranes.

🔧 Composition & Properties

  • Base: 20–30% Ethylene, 70–80% Tetrafluoroethylene.
  • Density: 1.70–1.75 g/cm³.
  • Melting Point: 260–270 °C.
  • Mechanical Strength: Very high impact resistance.
  • Continuous Heat Resistance: 150–170 °C.

🚗 Where ETFE is used in the automotive industry

ComponentExample partsObservations
Electrical / SensorsCables, insulation, connectorsUV stable, excellent dielectric
Fuel / ChemicalHoses, fittings, gasketsResistance to fuels and solvents
Cooling / AirNozzles, valves, housingsRigid and heat resistant
CoatingsMembranes, technical filmsNon-stick, self-cleaning, durable

🔧 Welding Temperature and Methods

MethodOptimal TempObservations
Hot Air270 – 290 °CEasy melting, stable flow
Heat Plate (Mirror)260 – 280 °CClean joint, bubble-free
Plastic Extrusion270 – 290 °CETFE or compatible FEP rods
Heat Fusion270 – 280 °CIdeal for tubes and gaskets

🔩 Material Compatibility

  • Compatible: ETFE, FEP, PFA, ECTFE, PVDF.
  • ⚠️ Good Compatibility: PTFE (with chemical etching).
  • Incompatible: ABS, PP, PE, PC, PA, POM, PVC, PET.

💡 ReplastMD Recommendation: Use ETFE or FEP rods at 280 °C. Clean the surface thoroughly and heat uniformly. Avoid direct high-pressure air on the weld zone to prevent micro-cracking.

🧠 How to Identify ETFE

  • Engraved marking: >ETFE<, >HALAR<, >FLUON<, >DYNEON<.
  • Texture: Glossy, smooth, semi-transparent, often with a slight bluish tint.
  • ReplastMD practical test: Tougher than FEP, very hard to tear. Self-extinguishes instantly with a clean flame.
