📘 ECTFE – Ethylene-Chlorotrifluoroethylene Copolymer
ECTFE is a high-performance fluoropolymer copolymer obtained from ethylene (C₂H₄) and chlorotrifluoroethylene (C₂ClF₃). It is renowned for its exceptional resistance to acids, bases, solvents, and UV radiation, as well as its dimensional stability and high rigidity. It is a more flexible and easier-to-process version of CTFE (Polychlorotrifluoroethylene), widely used in the chemical, automotive, and electrical industries.
🔍 What is ECTFE ECTFE combines the chemical inertness of fluoropolimers with the toughness and better adhesion of ethylene, resulting in an anti-corrosive, non-stick, and heat-resistant material that is much more weldable than PTFE or CTFE. It features a low friction coefficient, minimal moisture absorption, and excellent resistance to pressure and mechanical stress, even in aggressive environments.
🔧 Composition
- ECTFE Copolymer (ethylene + CTFE) (100%): Base fluoropolymer matrix.
- Additives (< 1%): UV / Thermal stabilizers for solar radiation and oxidation protection.
- Technical Pigments (< 0.5%): Industrial coloring (white, gray, black).
🚗 Automotive Applications
- Hoses and conduits for corrosive fluids: (BMW, Toyota, Renault) — Resistant to acids, brake fluids, and solvents.
- Linings for valves and pumps: (Mercedes, Ford) — High-level chemical and thermal insulation.
- Gaskets resistant to synthetic fluids: (VW, Peugeot) — Excellent barrier to gases and hot steam.
- Electrical insulation and sensors: (Hyundai, Dacia) — Excellent dielectric properties and non-stick surface.
🔩 Welding Compatibility
- ECTFE (same type): ✅ Very clean welding, precise thermal control.
- CTFE, PCTFE: ✅ Perfectly compatible for hybrid joints.
- PVDF, FEP: ⚠️ Partially compatible – differences in melting points.
- FKM, FEPM: ❌ No chemical adhesion – mechanical mounting required.
🔥 Welding / Bonding ECTFE at ReplastMD
- Hot Air: 260 – 300 °C (Clean welding with precise thermal control).
- Heat Plate: ✅ Recommended (Smooth joint, no bubbles, aesthetic).
- Extrusion: ✅ Easy to extrude into tubes and sheets.
- Chemical Bonding: ⚠️ Limited (Only with special adhesives for fluoropolymers).
💡 ReplastMD Recommendation: Weld at ~280 °C using controlled air or a Teflon-coated heat plate. ECTFE is the ideal material for gaskets, hoses, and components exposed to aggressive substances, combining the chemical resistance of CTFE with the flexibility of ethylene.
