🧩 ASA+PA – Acrylate Styrene Acrylate + Polyamide (Nylon)

(Hybrid technical material, combining the UV resistance and stability of ASA with the toughness and thermal resistance of polyamide (PA6/PA66). Used in exterior and technical automotive parts that must withstand sun, vibrations, and high temperatures.)

🔹 What is ASA+PA

ASA+PA is a high-performance blend that unites two very different material families:

  • ASA – for gloss, UV stability, and aging resistance.
  • PA (Polyamide) – for toughness, elasticity, and mechanical/thermal strength. The result is a dimensionally stable, hard, and stress-resistant plastic, used in automotive components exposed to harsh environments — sun, vibrations, heat, and impact. This material is more technical than simple ASA and more weather-stable than pure PA.

🔧 Composition

  • ASA (Acrylate Styrene Acrylate) – 40–60 %
  • PA6 / PA66 (Polyamide) – 40–60 %
  • Chemical Compatibilizers (MAH) – 1–5 %
  • Density: 1.08–1.15 g/cm³
  • Melting Point: ≈ 250–270 °C
  • Thermal Resistance: up to 120 °C.
  • UV Resistance: Good to very good.

🚗 Where ASA+PA is used in the automotive industry

Structural PartsMixed fasteners and framesCombined elasticity and toughness

🔧 Welding Temperature and Methods

MethodOptimal TemperatureObservations
Hot Air260 – 280 °CRequires careful control, uneven melting
Heat Plate (Mirror)250 – 270 °CGood for flat joints
Manual Extrusion240 – 260 °CRecommended for thick parts

🔩 What to Weld ASA+PA With (Material Compatibility)

Weldability of ASA+PA is crucial because ASA and PA have different chemical characteristics. Bonding is possible only with compatibilized materials.

Compatible with:

  • ASA+PA ↔ ASA+PA / PA6 / PA66 / ASA – ideal combination.
  • ASA+PA ↔ ABS+PA / ASA+PC / ASA+PMMA – good compatibility.
  • ASA+PA ↔ PA-GF / PA6-GF30 – partially compatible.

Incompatible with:

  • PP, PE, TPO, PVC – completely different melting points.

💡 ReplastMD Recommendation:

Use ASA+PA or PA6 rods at a temperature of 270–280 °C. Heat gradually to allow diffusion between ASA and PA phases. Avoid overheating — ASA can turn matte, and PA can oxidize. For structural parts, local reinforcement with mesh or fiber is recommended.

🏭 Manufacturers and Trade Names

  • BASF / INEOS: Terblend® N, ASA-PA
  • SABIC: Cycolac® ASA-PA
  • LG Chem: LUPOY® ASA+PA
  • Trinseo: Magnum™ ASA/PA

🧠 How to Identify ASA+PA

  • Engraved marking: >ASA+PA<, >PA/ASA<, >TERBLEND N<.
  • Semi-glossy or matte surface, hard, with a technical texture.
  • Yellow-blue flame, faint acrylic and amide scent.
  • Softens at ≈ 270 °C, but does not flow freely.
  • High scratch and UV resistance.
