🧩 ASA/PC – Luran® (ASA + Polycarbonate, BASF Blend)
(Premium technical material developed by BASF under the Luran® brand, combining the UV resistance and color stability of ASA with the toughness, rigidity, and thermal resistance of polycarbonate (PC). Frequently used for premium exterior parts, housings, frames, and visible automotive components.)
🔹 What is ASA/PC
ASA/PC (Luran®) is a high-performance thermoplastic blend resulting from the combination of ASA (Acrylate Styrene Acrylate) and PC (Polycarbonate).
This combination offers exceptional mechanical strength, thermal stability (up to 120 °C), and superior UV protection while maintaining gloss and aesthetic durability. It is a technical version of the ABS+PC blend, but optimized for exterior use — more resistant to aging, solar radiation, and extreme temperatures.
🔧 Composition
- ASA (Acrylate Styrene Acrylate) – 40–60 %
- PC (Polycarbonate) – 40–60 %
- UV Additives / Stabilizers – 1–5 %
- Density: 1.10–1.18 g/cm³
- Melting Point: ≈ 250–270 °C
- UV Resistance: Excellent.
- Impact Resistance: Very high, stable in cold and heat.
🚗 Where ASA/PC is used in the automotive industry
| Component | Example parts | Observations |
| Body Exterior | Mirror caps, headlight frames, front grilles | UV resistance + superior hardness |
| Premium Interior | Dashboard elements, consoles, glossy inserts | Gloss and scratch resistance |
| Technical Equip. | Sensor housings, electronic covers | Electrical insulation, thermal resistance |
| Bodywork / Tuning | Colored decorative elements | Maintains shape and color over time |
🔧 Welding Temperature and Methods
| Method | Optimal Temperature | Observations |
| Hot Air | 260 – 280 °C | Clean weld, uniform melting |
| Heat Plate (Mirror) | 250 – 270 °C | Glossy, precise joint |
| Manual Extrusion | 240 – 260 °C | Recommended for long cracks |
🔩 What to Weld ASA/PC With (Material Compatibility)
ASA/PC is compatible with ASA, PC, and ABS/PC or ASA/ABS blends.
✅ Compatible with:
- ASA/PC ↔ ASA/PC / PC/ASA / PC / ASA – ideal combination.
- ASA/PC ↔ PC/ABS / ASA+ABS / ASA+PMMA – good compatibility.
- ASA/PC ↔ ABS-HI / SAN – partially compatible.
❌ Incompatible with:
- PP, PE, PA, PVC, TPO – completely different melting points.
💡 ReplastMD Recommendation:
Use ASA/PC or PC+ABS rods at a temperature of 270–280 °C. Heat uniformly to ensure diffusion between phases without overheating the ASA layer. After welding, you can apply a quick pass of hot air to equalize the gloss.
🏭 Manufacturers
BASF / INEOS Styrolution (Germany) — Luran® S, Luran® HH, Terblend® N.
🧠 How to Identify ASA/PC
- Engraved marking: >ASA+PC<, >PC/ASA<, >LURAN<.
- Glossy, hard surface, scratch-resistant.
- Yellow-blue flame, faint acrylic scent.
- Softens at ≈ 270 °C without bubbling.
- Resists solar radiation and heat exceptionally well.
