🧩 ASA – Acrylonitrile Styrene Acrylate

(UV-resistant weldable plastic used for car bodies and exterior automotive parts.)

🔹 What is ASA

ASA (Acrylonitrile Styrene Acrylate) is an amorphous thermoplastic similar to ABS but with excellent resistance to UV radiation and weathering.

It was developed as a superior alternative to ABS for parts exposed to sun, rain, and temperature fluctuations, maintaining its glossy appearance and color without degradation.

🔧 Composition

  • Acrylonitrile – provides chemical resistance and rigidity.
  • Styrene – provides gloss and processability.
  • Acrylate – replaces the butadiene found in ABS, providing UV stability and resistant color.
  • Density: 1.05–1.10 g/cm³.
  • Melting Point: ≈ 230–260 °C.

🚗 Where ASA is used in the automotive industry

ComponentExample partsObservations
Body ExteriorGrilles, mirror caps, motorcycle fairings, spoilersHigh gloss, exceptional UV resistance
Interior / DecorativeDashboard elements exposed to sunStable colors, no yellowing
Accessories / TuningMirror covers, headlight housings, diffusersWelds similarly to ABS
Other ApplicationsTruck parts, RVs, boatsResists sun, water, and automotive paints

🔧 Welding Temperature and Methods

MethodOptimal TemperatureObservations
Hot Air260 – 280 °CWelds uniformly, no bubbles
Heat Plate (Mirror)250 – 270 °CClean weld, gloss preserved
Manual Extrusion240 – 260 °CFor cracks or thin edges

🔩 What to Weld ASA With (Material Compatibility)

If you’re wondering “what to weld ASA plastic with”, the answer is: ASA or ABS, as both have a similar chemical structure.

Compatible with:

  • ASA ↔ ASA – best compatibility, homogeneous and glossy weld.
  • ASA ↔ ABS – frequently used combination in mixed parts (bumpers, caps, brackets).
  • ASA ↔ PC/ABS – possible, but requires careful thermal control.

Incompatible with:

  • PP, PE, PA, PVC – different temperatures and structures, bonding impossible.

💡 ReplastMD Recommendation:

For automotive repairs, use original ASA rods. If unavailable, ABS rods can be used with the temperature adjusted by +10 °C. Avoid overheating — the acrylate tends to turn matte if the temperature exceeds 280 °C.

🏭 Manufacturers and Trade Names

  • BASF / INEOS: Luran® S
  • SABIC: Geloy® ASA
  • LG Chem: LUPOY® ASA
  • Chi Mei: Kibilac®
  • Trinseo: Magnum® ASA

🧠 How to Identify ASA

  • Engraved marking: >ASA<.
  • Glossy surface, does not change color under UV.
  • Faint sweet smell when burning.
  • Softens at 250–270 °C without bubbling.
  • ReplastMD practical test: if the part looks like ABS but doesn’t fade in the sun → likely ASA.
