🧩 ABS+PMMA – Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene + Acrylate (PMMA)

(Technical material with superior glossy finish and good impact and UV resistance, used for caps, frames, consoles, decorative elements, and visible auto parts with high aesthetic requirements.)

🔹 What is ABS+PMMA

ABS+PMMA is a two-component thermoplastic blend, combining ABS (for strength and flexibility) with PMMA (Polymethyl Methacrylate — for gloss, hardness, and UV stability).

The result is a rigid, glossy, and durable material, scratch-resistant, with a superior visual appearance compared to simple ABS. It is frequently used for visible automotive parts — mirror caps, grilles, frames, and housings — where aesthetics matter as much as mechanical resistance.

🔧 Composition

  • Acrylonitrile – 15–25 %
  • Butadiene – 10–20 %
  • Styrene – 30–40 %
  • PMMA (Acrylate) – 20–40 %
  • Density: 1.08–1.15 g/cm³
  • Melting Point: ≈ 230–250 °C
  • UV Resistance: Excellent (superior to ABS)

🚗 Where ABS+PMMA is used in the automotive industry

ComponentExample partsObservations
Body ExteriorMirror caps, frames, headlight housingsIntense gloss, UV resistant

🔧 Welding Temperature and Methods

MethodOptimal TemperatureObservations
Hot Air250 – 270 °CUniform weld, watch for gloss retention
Heat Plate (Mirror)240 – 260 °CClean joint, gloss maintained
Manual Extrusion230 – 250 °CFor cracks or supports

🔩 What to Weld ABS+PMMA With (Material Compatibility)

Being a styrenic-acrylic hybrid, ABS+PMMA is compatible with ABS, ASA, and PC/ABS.

Compatible with:

  • ABS+PMMA ↔ ABS+PMMA / ABS / ASA / SAN – ideal combination.
  • ABS+PMMA ↔ PC/ABS / PMMA / ABS-HI – good compatibility.
  • ABS+PMMA ↔ PS-HI / HIPS – partially compatible.

Incompatible with:

  • PP, PE, PA, PVC – different melting points, no adhesion.

💡 ReplastMD Recommendation:

Use ABS+PMMA or standard ABS rods at a temperature of 260–270 °C. Heat uniformly and work in thin layers to avoid losing the gloss. After welding, you can restore the finish with fine acrylic polish or clear coat.
