🧩 ABS+PA – Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene + Polyamide (Nylon)

(High-performance technical material, with high mechanical resistance, controlled elasticity, and superior thermal stability. Used in brackets, covers, fastening parts, and automotive elements exposed to high stress and temperatures.)

🔹 What is ABS+PA

ABS+PA (ABS + Polyamide) is a technical hybrid blend that combines ABS (for gloss, dimensional stability, and processability) with polyamide (PA6 or PA66) (for high mechanical, thermal, and chemical resistance).

The result is a durable, slightly elastic, and heat-stable material, ideal for automotive parts working under vibration and temperatures of 80–120 °C. ABS+PA is used especially for structural and technical components where simple ABS would be too soft and pure PA too rigid or brittle.

🔧 Composition

  • Acrylonitrile – 10–20 %
  • Butadiene – 10–15 %
  • Styrene – 30–40 %
  • Polyamide (PA6 or PA66) – 30–50 %
  • Density: 1.10–1.20 g/cm³
  • Melting Point: ≈ 240–260 °C
  • Impact Resistance: very good (up to 25 kJ/m²)
  • Thermal Resistance: up to 120 °C continuous

🚗 Where ABS+PA is used in the automotive industry

ComponentExample partsObservations
Engine BaySensor covers, brackets, fastenersHeat-stable and vibration resistant
Technical InteriorBrackets, clips, structural coversElastic but very strong
ExteriorConcealed elements, power mountsGood paint adhesion, medium gloss
Electrical Equip.Housings and guidesGood insulation, but watch for humidity

🔧 Welding Temperature and Methods

MethodOptimal TemperatureObservations
Hot Air260 – 280 °CPossible, but requires compatible ABS-PA rod
Heat Plate (Mirror)250 – 270 °CRecommended for flat joints
Manual Extrusion240 – 260 °CRequires careful control, uneven melting

🔩 What to Weld ABS+PA With (Material Compatibility)

The question “what to weld ABS+PA with” is important because ABS and PA are polymers with different thermal properties and polarities.

Compatible with:

  • ABS+PA ↔ ABS+PA / PA6 / PA66 / ABS – ideal combination.
  • ABS+PA ↔ PC/ABS / ABS-GF / ABS-HI – good compatibility.
  • ABS+PA ↔ PA-GF / modified PA+ABS – partially compatible.

Incompatible with:

  • PP, PE, TPO, PVC – completely different melting points, no adhesion.

💡 ReplastMD Recommendation:

Use ABS+PA or PA6 rods at a temperature of 270–280 °C. Heat slowly to avoid burning the ABS component. During cooling, apply constant pressure for good diffusion between layers. For structural parts, we recommend local reinforcement through inserts.

🧠 How to Identify ABS+PA

  • Engraved marking: >ABS+PA<, >PA/ABS<, >ABS-PA6<, >TERBLEND N<.
  • Matte black or dark grey color, slightly textured surface.
  • Yellow-blue flame, faint chemical smell (styrene + amide).
  • Softens at ≈ 270 °C, but melting is slow and elastic.
  • Very rigid, but not brittle when bent.
