🧩 ABS-HI – High Impact Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene
(Tough and elastic technical material with excellent resistance to shocks and variable temperatures. Widely used in bumpers, caps, consoles, fairings, and other automotive components subject to mechanical stress.)
🔹 What is ABS-HI
ABS-HI (High Impact Acrylonitrile-Butadiene-Styrene) is a modified version of classic ABS, containing a higher proportion of butadiene (the rubber component) to boost its elasticity and shock resistance.
The result is a durable, lightweight, easily processable, and perfectly weldable thermoplastic, ideal for car parts exposed to vibrations, impacts, or temperature fluctuations.
🔧 Composition
- Acrylonitrile – 15–25 % (chemical resistance).
- Butadiene – 15–30 % (elasticity, impact).
- Styrene – 40–60 % (gloss, rigidity).
- Density: 1.03–1.08 g/cm³.
- Melting Point: ≈ 220–240 °C.
- Impact Resistance: ≈ 15–25 kJ/m² (Charpy).
🚗 Where ABS-HI is used in the automotive industry
| Component | Example parts | Observations |
| Body / Exterior | Bumpers, spoilers, motorcycle fairings | Resistant to shocks and vibrations |
| Car Interior | Dashboard, center console, handles | Lightweight, processable, aesthetic |
| Technical Equip. | Sensor brackets, housings | Thermally and mechanically stable |
| Aftermarket | Tuning parts, custom housings | Easily weldable and paintable |
🔧 Welding Temperature and Methods
| Method | Optimal Temperature | Observations |
| Hot Air | 260 – 280 °C | Most common method, uniform weld |
| Heat Plate (Mirror) | 250 – 270 °C | Clean, controlled joint |
| Manual Extrusion | 240 – 260 °C | Ideal for long cracks |
🔩 What to Weld ABS-HI With (Material Compatibility)
Since it is a styrenic material, it is compatible with standard ABS, ASA, SAN, and PC/ABS.
✅ Compatible with:
- ABS-HI ↔ ABS-HI / ABS / ASA / SAN – ideal combination.
- ABS-HI ↔ PC/ABS – high compatibility (very common in modern parts).
- ABS-HI ↔ HIPS – partially compatible.
❌ Incompatible with:
- PP, PE, PA, PVC – completely different structures and melting points.
🧠 How to Identify ABS-HI
- Engraved marking: >ABS-HI<, >ABS-IMPACT<, >ABS+HI<.
- Glossy surface, slightly elastic under pressure.
- Yellow-blue flame, sweet chemical scent.
- Softens at ≈ 260 °C without bubbling.
- Bends slightly without cracking.
