🧩 ABS/Bayblend – Bayblend® (Commercial ABS + PC Blend)
(Premium technical material produced by Covestro, consisting of an optimized blend of Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS) and Polycarbonate (PC). It represents one of the highest-performing plastic combinations used in the automotive industry for structural and aesthetic parts.)
🔹 What is ABS/Bayblend
Bayblend® is the trade name for the ABS + PC blend developed by Covestro (formerly Bayer MaterialScience).
This material combines the elasticity and gloss of ABS with the toughness, heat resistance, and dimensional stability of PC. The result: an extremely impact-resistant plastic, thermally stable up to 120 °C, with a uniform glossy appearance and excellent processability for welding and painting. Bayblend is found in many car models, especially in center consoles, dashboards, and technical housings.
🔧 Composition
- ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene) – 40–60 %
- PC (Polycarbonate) – 40–60 %
- Additives (Thermal / UV / Dyes) – 1–5 %
- Density: 1.12–1.20 g/cm³
- Melting Point: ≈ 250–270 °C
- Impact Strength (Charpy): > 20 kJ/m²
- Continuous use temperature: –40 °C to 115 °C.
🚗 Where Bayblend is used in the automotive industry
| Component | Example parts | Observations |
| Car Interior | Dashboard, center console | Premium gloss, excellent stability |
| Light Exterior | Mirror caps, headlight frames | Good UV resistance (in FR/UV versions) |
| Technical Equip. | Sensor housings, control units | Superior hardness and insulation |
| Intermediate Struct. | Supports, frames, heavy covers | Thermally stable, vibration resistant |
🔧 Welding Temperature and Methods
| Method | Optimal Temperature | Observations |
| Hot Air | 260 – 280 °C | Clean, very uniform weld |
| Heat Plate (Mirror) | 250 – 270 °C | Perfect joint, gloss preserved |
| Manual Extrusion | 240 – 260 °C | Ideal for long cracks |
🔩 What to Weld ABS/Bayblend With (Material Compatibility)
Since it is an ABS+PC blend, Bayblend is fully compatible with materials from the same styrenic-carbonic family.
✅ Compatible with:
- Bayblend ↔ Bayblend / ABS+PC / PC/ABS / ABS / PC – ideal combination.
- Bayblend ↔ ASA / ABS+PMMA / SAN – good compatibility.
- Bayblend ↔ ABS-HI / ABS-FR – partially compatible (thermal control required).
❌ Incompatible with:
- PP, PE, PA, PVC, TPO – completely different melting points.
💡 ReplastMD Recommendation:
Use ABS+PC or Bayblend rods at a temperature of 270–280 °C. Heat uniformly and avoid direct flames. For glossy surfaces, you can buff the area with hot air after cooling to restore the original finish.

🧠 How to Identify Bayblend
- Engraved marking: >PC+ABS<, >ABS/PC<, >BAYBLEND<.
- Glossy, hard surface, slightly elastic under pressure.
- Yellow-blue flame, faint sweet-chemical scent.
- Softens at ≈ 270 °C without bubbling.
- Common colors: glossy black, metallic grey, technical beige.
