When buying a car, it’s important to know not only its cost but also the basics of maintenance. One key skill is replacing windshield wipers, as they ensure clear visibility in rain, snow, and poor weather.
Why wipers are important
Windshield wipers contribute directly to driving safety:
- Clear visibility: they remove rain, snow, dirt, and debris.
- Safety: poor visibility is a major cause of accidents; working wipers reduce the risk.
- Glass protection: regular cleaning prevents dirt buildup that can scratch the windshield.
How often to replace wipers
Wiper lifespan depends on quality and usage conditions rather than mileage. You should replace them if:
- they fail to clean the glass in one pass;
- streaks, smudges, or water remain;
- they jump, squeak, or leave marks.
Cost of replacement
Prices vary between service centers, and some may overcharge. Since the procedure is simple and similar for most car models, many drivers replace wipers on their own.
How to replace wipers correctly
Replacement depends on the type of mounting:
- J-Hook: release the locking tab, slide the blade toward the arm axis, remove it, and click the new one into place.
- Pin Arm: unclip the lock, turn the blade perpendicular to the windshield, remove it from the pin, and install the new one.
- VATL5.1: press the button at the blade’s end, slide the latch toward the windshield, remove, and reinstall in reverse order.
- Push Button: press the release button and slide the old blade off the arm. Remove the transport lock from the new blade before installation.
Other mount types exist as well; instructions on the packaging will show how to install the correct model for your vehicle.
