Autumn brings slippery roads, poor visibility, and hidden hazards under puddles. To stay safe and comfortable while driving in the rain, keep these essential tips in mind.
1. Proper lighting is crucial
Rain and early sunsets significantly reduce visibility. Make sure your headlights are clean and working. Use low beams at any time of day — it’s required by law. Good lighting helps you see the road and makes you visible to others.
2. Clean windows mean safe driving
Wipers are your main defense against water and dirt. Worn-out blades leave streaks that can obstruct your view. Check them regularly and replace them each season.
3. Prevent window fogging
Humidity increases in autumn, causing interior fogging. A functioning air conditioner quickly removes moisture. If fogging persists, the cabin filter may need replacement.
4. Monitor tire condition
Tires ensure traction — and on wet asphalt, their condition is critical. Keep tread depth above 1.6 mm. Worn tires cannot effectively disperse water, increasing the risk of hydroplaning.
Slow down when driving through large puddles — deep holes may hide beneath the water.
Wet leaves are another danger: they become extremely slippery when soaked.
5. Drive calmly and smoothly
Stopping distance increases on wet roads, even with ABS. Avoid sudden braking and sharp maneuvers. Moderate, steady driving reduces risks.
6. Increase following distance
Poor visibility and wet asphalt lead to more fender-benders. If the safe distance in summer is 3 seconds, during heavy rain it should be at least double — ideally triple. This gives you enough time to react.
